oh jeez, i confess i'm not that knowledgeable, i can't speak to how to actually test the CCFL.

those old CCFL eventually fade and die; sometimes the potentiometer appears broken simply because no adjustment can affect the failing tube, it's beyond reach. i replaced the backlight in my powerbook 100 with an off-the-shelf LED kit. (write up over at the 68KMLA)
