You are correct. Without cache card there is only the normal chime. With cache, extra chimes and then freeze. The extra chimes are kinda nice though :)

That may be the issue in my case too. Now when I think about it, when I tried different operating systems I managed to boot with a 6.something. Edit: I need to get myself familiar with resedit and may need to get back for more help.
