Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Quick update on an issue I've seen using post #616 "D" version drop on an H2825 unit. It has happened twice now so I thought it might be useful to share. The first time it happened at about 1900 frames into a 50 foot roll of Super 8 (~3600 frames total/roll). The display froze at that frame...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I just tried this for you and I see no ill effects. My unit: H2825 Has been running with post #616 firmware since the version was dropped For this experiment: Flashed to "B" from post #143 Splash screen for this variant appeared, then went to normal operating screen as expected No...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I think you're wise to be hesitant and it's probably best to wait and see if the firmware guys can weigh in. I'm curious if the reports about display issues were on this site and what the symptoms were. Can you list a few of the posts so I can go back and read them? It seems as though the...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I had the same question about the sharpness setting with D units. Steve's video in post #1 at about the 20:22 mark talks about the sharpness setting. It sounds like he determined that -1 was about where he wanted to be but he recommended running your own test clips to find your own preference...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I tried the post #605 drop - nothing new to report from me except that the flicker-free does work. I like that it allows you to see the frame number so I can estimate when I need to come back to shut it off. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to help with reporting on performance with...

Good observation; I never noticed that the image changed based on the switch location. Mine is a "D" so I can't answer your question of how long it has done that. It will update live as you toggle the switch though.

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

When melw says to check the reel type in post #605, he's saying to verify whether you have type A, B, C, or D against the list of known types. His firmware drops to date are for type D. reel type = Kodak Reels type. The prompt you're seeing after you press record is simply a warning to manually...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I think you nailed it with the formatting theory. I had forgotten that I had a 128GB SD that I formatted with FAT32 and was using an exFAT formatted 128GB card for the failed captures. I switched to the FAT32 128GB with the post #594 4X firmware and it worked. Both 128GB SD cards and the 16GB...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Not sure if my piecemeal feedback is helpful but I tried the post #597 drop. Again, I have a confirmed D unit. The flash to this release also worked as expected and I ran a 50ft reel through which seemed to run as expected. At the end of the reel, I clicked OK to end, and the close or playback...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Wow, thank you for picking this back up! My serial number is H2825 and I've been using videodoctor's firmware so I have a confirmed D unit. The flash to the melw release in post 594 worked as expected and I ran a 50ft reel through which seemed to run as expected. At the end of the reel, I...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I think the concern here is that it was suggested that since this is an unknown serial number, there is a possibility that it could be a 5th variant and if he flashes to "D" and it's really "E" (assuming that exists), he would brick his unit. If you go back to post 215 and prior posts, you can...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Could you have unknowingly caused some minor damage while the unit was opened up for the mod that got worse after some use? I'd open it back up and inspect for loose wires, cracked solder joints, missing components, etc. I doubt this is related to firmware if it's behaving the same way with...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

@StevieB I'm new as well and the experts will jump in with an answer but since the stock firmware is available for A, B, C, and D versions, there is no risk in trying one since you can always revert back as long as you don't have an unknown E version, assuming that exists. When you type your...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

There are experts on here that can probably confirm but I'd say yours is a D version based on the 4th & 5th digits being 25. *** EDIT 7/4/2026 - I'm not sure J2925 is confirmed to be type "D" yet. There is speculation of the possibility that a new "E" could be out there. If you flash to the...
