I'll bet the edge connector has dirt or debris in it I know it may sound crazy but blow it out carefully. I had a similar issue on my Color Classic and this solved my issue. Also inspect the edge connector for any damage to the pins.

I suppose you could I know it’s not perfect so feel free to alter it. I like the locking tab as it snaps it into place but shouldn’t really be an issue if you remove it like you said the friction alone holds it and you are correct it does.
