If the firmware on that iMac hasn't been updated, you could add a floppy drive to it. Logic board does have the solder pads for the 20-pin connector. If I remember correctly, it's the only post-Steve Jobs return desktop computer that can use a non-USB floppy drive.

    Best OS for Portable 5120?

^Ah, ok. Maybe a Mac that can use 7.5 or 7.6 without being too slow would work as a bridge for AirTalk, allowing your Portable and other 68000 Macs to connect via LocalTalk. Open Transport seems to be a bit more reliable for networking purposes than the older MacTCP technology.

    Best OS for Portable 5120?

On a 68000-based machine, System 6 is the way to go. 7 is just too pokey, even on those machines with the 16 MHz 68000 chip (Portable series, and PB100). I actually downgraded my previous SE from 7.1 to 6.0.8. Yes, 7.1 did run under 2.5MB of RAM, even though, on a 68000 machine, Apple...

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

Sure. One of the D830s we have is running a 320GB SATA spinner.

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

Agreed on the D series high point. Those, and the Inspiron 8500/8600/9100 machines were pretty good. My sister and I had an 8500 and an 8600, respectively. Hers was bought new in 2003. Mine, found it in 2010 at RE-PC in Seattle with a broken display and a bad video card. Replaced the nVidia...

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

Jeff, Yep. They were. Unlike Apple's soldered chips on the same era MacBook/MacBook Pro machines.

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

Sure, not a problem. It's not much more involved than doing the keyboard swap, and, if your machine has the nVidia Quadro GPU installed, it might be worth at least going in there and replacing the old thermal paste with some fresh paste to keep the chip from suiciding itself.

What I've received as of late...

Just after my previous post, added a Mac II programmer's switch assembly to the IIfx. Didn't come with one. In November, picked up an Apple active SCSI terminator, in hopes of not needing to worry about the black terminator needed by certain IIfx boards. Last month, picked up a nicer IIgs Woz...

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

One thing that might be worth doing, is to upgrade to a Penryn die Core 2 Duo chip. I had a D830 about 10 years ago. Ran Win 7 Ultimate on it. Was a decent machine, but the fan would go bonkers while either watching YT videos or using Google Maps. Had the 2.2 GHz T7500 processor installed...

Hacking FinderHack: CMD-DEL for System 7.1

Click on the new message icon in the lower right corner where it says "Messages", then type in his username. Should be able to get ahold of him that way. According to the Eamon Wiki page, he looks to still be alive. https://eamon.wiki/Donald_Brown

Mac IIfx no floppy power on Pin 11 x2

Firstly, forgot to say, that good to hear that the IIci has been working well for ya. And, that you finally figured out why your IIfx was not reading floppies. I'd probably run a bodge wire from L13 to the underside of the board. Not ideal, but it'd get the connection fixed.

Did something a little derpy a few days back...

Noticed that all the files on my 10.9.5 partition had a "...fetching" owner entry in the get info dialog box. So, I decided to delete that. Not a good idea, especially since Adobe has killed off the activation servers for CS4. So, I'm now stuck with an unuseable copy of Photoshop that I...

    XServe without a rack?

Yeah, will probably be a lot like a MDD running at full-tilt, noise-wise. Might be another good candidate for an ATX power supply swap.

When Was The Last Time You Dumpster Dove? :)

Haven't personally done it, but a buddy of mine found my old Mac Pro sitting on the curb in his neighborhood. 6GB RAM, 8-core 2.8 GHz early 2008 A1186. No hard drives or drive sleds. Did have a Radeon HD 5770 video card installed. Brought it home, took the 160GB hard drive from the A1181...
