Hello!

I think I'm going to brave a Takky upgrade on my Color Classic (upgrading the machine to PowerPC).

Have any of you done it before and do you have any advice for me? The main resource I've found on the internet is https://powercc.org/takky/ , I couldn't find a youtube tutorial.

Thank you in advance!

The 300mhz 6500. I saw that it's an option but that I didn't need to unless I was adding a G3 upgrade card or something else power hungry.

My Takky modded CC went through several iterations over the many years I've had it: Mystic, 630 DOS Compatible Board, and now a 6500/250 board with a Sonnet L2 G3 500 card (bought it when Sonnet still sold them). It will/should run without separate 3.3v regulator if you don't use a G3 upgrade and other devices that require it. If you want to G3, you need to add one.

Power delivery was always a bit weak since especially the PPC boards demand a lot of 5v (under load I could see the screen dimming) so instead of just adding a regulator I ended up adding a SFX ATX PSU in the compartment that held the hard drive and created a custom cable to wire in 5v and 3.3V from the ATX PSU into the harness vs. having the CC provide those. I used a modular PSU so I wouldn't need to worry about the cable mess (the modular replacement I did if I recall last year, the one in there before was a regular SFX that had a lot of wiring since it was from times before modular PSUs were a thing). I can't recall if I also provided the -12v via the ATX PSU as well (I think I do). The CC analogue board needs some load to work correctly so I let the CC provide the 12v vs the ATX PSU.

To switch on the ATX PSU when you press the keyboard soft start button I wired in a relay that closes the PS_ON line on the ATX PSU (pulls it to ground) when you press it. The relay is controlled by the 5v trickle line that is being fed by the CC. As for powering the ATX PSU I soldered extra leads to the IEC socket on the CC and routed these to the ATX PSU.

Definitely doable just take your time.

If you’re interested, I also make a version of my LCD-CC conversion that is dedicated to whoever wants to build a Takky from scratch, i.e. has still a stock Color Classic and has not yet modified it in any way.
my mod allows to use an almost unmodified 630 harness (Basically, no flat cable modification, and no rewiring of the analog board) and of course allows to use of an LCD flat panel display and SFX power supply, 800 x 600 resolution, stereo sound and plenty of power for any PCI card, G3 upgrades, etc. etc.
