In 2007, 68kMLA member "Mac128" (David Sibley) and myself (JDW) discussed the creation of 800K "MFS" disks and floppy drives that would work with the Macintosh 128K and 512K, regardless of ROM version. Extensive testing was done to confirm what would and would not work. A month later, Mac128 compiled the information into an easily readable PDF file and made it downloadable from his website. Sadly, it went offline at the end of 2023, and unfortunately, the Internet Archive did not properly archive his website, making the PDF impossible to download. I emailed Mac128 in July 2024 about this, but after waiting 3 months, no reply came.
The good news is that I found an archived version of the PDF on my hard drive today. I am uploading it as a valuable resource for all to enjoy. I hope it helps you get more enjoyment from your Mac128K and Mac512K machines, regardless of ROM.
DOWNLOAD NOTE!

DOWNLOAD the "Magic" System 2.0, Finder 4.1 disk image
(Mac128 emailed it to me on Aug 19, 2007. It was originally named "2041HD20 copy.img". Read about it here.)
USAGE NOTE: The image is 400K so you can write it to real 400K floppy for use in a 400K drive, but you'll need an 800K drive to make 800K MFS disks. (There's only 1 head on 400K drives.) If you only have the internal 400K drive on your Mac, I recommend getting a FloppyEMU so you can use that as your external drive, which will allow you to then use 800K MFS disks.
