    Tunnel vision on PB170

Whatever, it‘s just for showing a severely compromised lcd panel in a similar pattern. That stuff just deteriorates, it was not designed to last forever. Amen.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

This is the “typical” condition you would see lcd screens looking like on auctions in Japan. Summers here get awfully humid and hot. Put “time” into the equation, and the result is that most of vintage laptop panels are gone. Is it about delamination or is it because of humidity? Or is it...

Logic Board - Macintosh SE Reloaded

This project is really fascinating, congratulations. And I truly appreciate the videos, they are both insightful and entertaining, thanks @JDW ! Fortunately, though, I don’t have a busted plain SE to rebuild. However, I have an SE/30 logic board which – unfortunately - needs (as minimum) the...

SE/30 crash when writing to floppy

Hi All, I post my lines here, just to avoid creating too many threads. Issue: in one of those stupid moments which unfortunately are part of any tinkerer experience, today it just happened that I made a totally idiotic thing and apparently I busted something on my beloved SE/30 logic board...

    Macintosh Portable Battery Adapter

To my direct experience, the main issues with the Portable are the internal HD which invariably fails, and - more serious - the lcd panel that delaminates. The battery has to be maintained in working order for operating the machine, but can be easily rebuilt.

What are your vintage grail items?

Anyhow, over almost 25 years of “activity” I have managed to get (or should I say amass?) *almost* all the machines I dreamt of when I was… 25 years younger. But for keeping the flame alive, any collection worth its name shall never be completed. So is mine. My preference always went to the...

What are your vintage grail items?

Surely LC757s pop up relatively often, but they normally go at around 30k to 35k yen. A tad pricey by my tastes. Giving you the problem of inhousing yet another bulky piece of hardware, which here in Japan may be fastidious to many of us. Or disposing it altogether, after ripping off the...

How do I put Mac OS8 on an SE/30 using BlueScsi

Not necessarily, I’m sure there’s still hope to get it working with BlueSCSI. The hack about the Mac OS version has nothing to do with the actual hardware. First, get Blue SCSI working on your Mac, then you will run the procedure.

How do I put Mac OS8 on an SE/30 using BlueScsi

The linked procedure for installing Mac OS 8 on 030 Macs just works, provided that the hardware is ready. I used it for installing OS 8.1 on a Mac SE/30 and a Performa 275 and I can confirm they both operate fine. However, they also both run on SCSI2SD. I only have one BlueSCSI unit installed in...

How do I put Mac OS8 on an SE/30 using BlueScsi

This seems to me a problem with the BlueSCSI setup, not with the installation of MacOS 8. I’d suggest to operate the set up on actual hardware, rather than an emulator. SCSI termination set up may be the reason why the SD is not recognized.

    No programming categories?

I started programming in a committed way on an LC and ThinkPascal. Hard to believe, but back at the time it was considered a diminutive, yet viable entry point. Pascal had an intrinsic elegance that was simply unbeatable, and the implementation offered by Symantec with the “Think Pascal” series...

    No programming categories?

I still have the FutureBasic package I bought too many years ago now. It was an extremely appealing proposition for “easily” writing GUI driven applications on 68k Macs. I never liked Basic, though, so after a little while I went back to my beloved ThinkPascal for writing my “engineering...

    SCSI Optical Drives

Just scored this mammoth, thought it was something tiny and compact, but the tray lid lies… Built like a tank. Still working perfectly, both on Macs and NeXTs.

Apple A/UX 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.1 installation media and documentation project

HDT can format a 640 disk, it transparently adjusts to the 2048 block size. However, once I get to step 6) the disk is seen at 1/4 of the formatted capacity, as the software assumes the block size shall necessarily be 512 Kb. From there on, whatever attempt to do anything with the disk leads to...

Apple A/UX 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.1 installation media and documentation project

Now, 230 Mb disks are maybe too small, 540 Mb ones almost impossible to source. 640 Mb would be just perfect, but the block size is a hurdle. Still, I managed to get them work flawlessly on my NeXT hardware, even to operate as a boot disk (yes, they are much faster and much quieter than the...

Apple A/UX 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.1 installation media and documentation project

Mac SE/30 32Mb on which - just for the fun of it - I recently installed a Fujitsu 640Mb MO drive in place of the internal floppy. After some trials, I finally managed to get A/UX 3.0.1 (3.1) installed on a 230 Mb cartridge and to have the Mac booting off from it (kind of a “NeXTintosh”…). Major...

    SuperDrive (floppy) maintenance

Honestly, I have no precise idea. Based on the inferred working principles, I‘d say misalignment of the rotor is simply not possible, unless deliberately induced. As for the zero track sensor, I would be curious to see the response curve, for sure it’s not a “perfect” step between the two...

    SuperDrive (floppy) maintenance

Yes, it can happen, as the reading tolerance is just 10% of the track width. That’s why the “in between tracks” alignment, which is controlled by the angular position of the rotor wrt a defined zero position was factory calibrated and sealed. The zero track alignment is a gross adjustment window...
