Upgrading IIsi onboard RAM to 4MB

Good point that if you don't connect anything to the built-in video that means that the system is not using RAM based built-in video (RBV) so Bank A and B are equally as performant. it's only "Vampire Video" if you try to use Bank A RAM for System/Program memory and make use of the built-in...

Curious, has anyone brought a "dead" 2400c back to life by recapping its power/IO board?

Upgrading IIsi onboard RAM to 4MB

Zane, I agree with you with one caveat, if you are not using built-in video (i.e you are using a PDS or NuBus video card) you *could* make the case that you want more then 65MB of RAM: Bank A 1MB (fixed), Bank B 64MB (4x 16MB SIMMs). I personally don't see the need for this other then the...

    Color Classic motherboard woes

Do the grounding metal springs on motherboard A look good, the same as motherboard B? None missing, all making good contact with the bottom metal shield? Your description is giving me deja vu in my own Color Classic troubleshooting a couple years ago which I think I fixed by fixing a grounding...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

Oh yeah there are! I find them super interesting to read through. The "Architecture - System Block Diagrams" are particularly neat. If you Google "<Mac_Model_Name> Apple Hardware Developer Note" it often results in a copy archived somewhere live today, alternatively you can get them off the...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

Well the IIsi which this Extension is specifically for has a fixed 1MB soldered on the Logic board for Bank A. I imagine the author would have just hard code it to eat up the rest of that 1MB not used by the RAM based built-in video. I suppose if there is a way to code to detect how much memory...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

IIsi RAM-Muncher INIT: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/iisi-ram-muncher-init I would think it could work on a IIci but probably only if you have 1MB of RAM in Bank A.

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

The issue is if you use the RAM based built-in Video on the iici you lower the system's CPU performance, as RAM Bank A becomes slower to access by the CPU. BUT this is ONLY IF you also use RAM Bank A for running system/applications. If you tie up the memory in Bank A (above that which is used by...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

If you don't have a NuBus video card and need to use the built-in video you can speed up a IIci by using up the all the memory in Bank A (which is used by the built-in video) with Disk Cache and/or a RAM disk via the memory control panel. That forces programs to run out of Bank B which is...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

Are you using onboard video? Using a NuBus video provides a nice ~10% CPU bump as the CPU doesn't have to compete with the onboard video for access to bank A RAM.

    Power Macintosh 7100/80 Cache

Thanks, no ROM chips there (would be 4 pretty big ones) there so this is not a combo ROM/L2 cache module from a 6200. Those small chips are likely just part of the cache logic. I guess some component(s) just went bad on your L2 cache module :-/

    Power Macintosh 7100/80 Cache

The L2 Cache modules for PM 6100/7100/8100 Macs seem extra rare, I see ones for later Power Macs on eBay from time to time but not these. A G3/G4 PDS CPU upgrade is a much bigger performance boost but they go for several hundred these days. Would be cool if these got recreated, especially a...

    Power Macintosh 7100/80 Cache

Yes, that appears to be a L2 cache module. The connector notches indicate it would FIT in the 6100/7100/8100 PMs, but that connector is also shared with the 62xx series which use combo ROM/L2 cache modules. Maybe it's one of those and not just a dead Cache module? Can you post a picture of the...

PowerMac 6500 PCI graphics card options? (Feeling overwhelmed)

The 6500 has two 7" PCI slots so you can't use AGP cards in it, only 7" PCI graphics cards. Are you going for multiple displays and/or an upgrade from the 6500's built-in ATI 3D Rage II with 2MB of VRAM? On their own the built in graphics aren't bad in my opinion, a nice step up from the 6400...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Oh good, sometimes I guess I interpret offense in wording that isn‘t intended. I know I struggle with communicating nuisance sometimes, I probably over rely on on emoji. Agreed! I think for PPC Macs with PCI slots there are likely some fast SCSI options that might not be that hard to find...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Sorry, didn’t mean to offend, just thought question was about what Macs support 10MB/s fast SCSI out of the box. Don’t think we’d want folks thinking the PPC Performa 6200 has fast SCSI or example, it’s not all PPC Macs. A list of 10MB/s fast SCSI NuBus, PDS and PCI cards would definitely be...
