    I just can't say NO - B&W G3

Well, if you google long enough, you can find the answers. Maybe not the answer you were looking for, but a better answer than you have right now. I managed to find this page that talks about the B&W bus speed settings. So I was able to lower the standard 100MHz to 66MHz and did some...

    I just can't say NO - B&W G3

I got it to boot, originally thought it was IDE bus, but it was a bad ram. I cannot get the G4 to boot, but I had a spare G3-350MHz ZIF, so that boots fine at 350 and 400. I checked for the G4 enabler (OWC/NewerTech), and it is active. No variation of jumpers on CPU speed will boot the G4. I...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

I just grabbed another B&W so I will try some SSD options this weekend.

    I just can't say NO - B&W G3

I stopped by Free Geek Minneapolis yesterday. A lonely B&W "no chime, no boot, $10 as-is". I had to take it home. The data plate on the back shows it is a 450MHz, so not likely a gen1 motherboard. I cracked it open this morning before heading off to work to see what lays in store... Two...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Maybe too much info: https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/26812/ide-ssd-pulling-down-data-bus https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=96383 Partition size limit, but you said your SSD is 64GB. Try partitioning it into two 32GB or a 4GB and 60GB and see if the 4GB boots after copying.

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

It may be that the B&W is a special kind of problem child. I just popped mine open and I have the original HD and a SCSI drive in it... the SSD I was toying with is not there, so I must have not got it working in the B&W either. Looking forward to the challenge in January! I know I used some...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

I will pull all of mine out and check the versions probably next January for the PPC Challenge. I do have one connected to my AppleTV Gen 1. Works fine. Seems to be the same JM20330 chip that yours uses. Here is one more attempt to try: Remove the optical drive from the chain... and only...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Try the SSD back under the optical and see if it boots there? I have seen some really weird behavior with sata/ide adapters. Some of it may be bus speed related. I think the bus is 33MHz and maybe your adapter can't run that slow? You may have to look at flashing one of those SATA Raid cards...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

After you power up, hold down the left shift key and do not release it until the desktop is loaded. That should be safe mode with no extensions. If it boots fine that way, then there has to be something corrupt in there or some offending extension. The original HD was a fully functional install?

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

There are two ATA busses in the B&W G3. If you don't have a ZIP drive under the optical drive, try putting your SSD in there (assuming your adapter has a master/slave jumper). You may have to try a few different options with the 4 pin jumpers (Toshiba for reference, may not apply to your adapter).

Fun with Three Early MacPro models: 1,1 2,1 3,1

Oops, I did it again. Another stop at Free Geek Minneapolis and I found this 3,1 for $5. Says chimes but no video. Even an empty case on eBay is going for over 50 dollars, so I can't say no. No hard drive, 4 x 1GB 800MHz PC2-6400 FBDIMMS, Nvidia 8800GT 512MB. Removed video card, fans...

    120GB SSDs in G4 Cube

Here is my suggestion: Try the internal SSD with the original optical drive disconnected. That is what was holding me back. My optical drive was a little sticky to begin with, so I replaced it with a slimline slot-load SATA drive from an old iMac. Another SATA->IDE adapter for the optical...

How Embarrassing-A Lesson In Purchasing A Refurbished Computer From Apple's Site

When I lived in the Caribbean for 7 years, I also used a freight forwarder from Miami, FL Four Star Cargo (which also did mail forwarding, called "The Mailbox"). They would sometimes put the cargo in the mail forwarding spot (same physical address in Miami) and try to charge you mail postage...

Rear release latch removal tip : MacPro Classic 1,1 -> 5,1

Lets say for some reason you are refinishing your case and want to disassemble all parts beforehand. Getting that latch off is kind of tricky. I googled and didn't find the answer... but I finally figured it out. The top hinge pin is held in place by a friction mount held in place by two...

Fun with Three Early MacPro models: 1,1 2,1 3,1

Spent some more time with the 2,1 and 3,1 this weekend. Upgraded the 3,1 from 2.8GHz to 3.0GHz for $12. Previiously flashed the GTX 770 for Mac boot screen, and got OCLP to install Ventura (2nd time). More RAM coming next week. Flashed and old HD 4870 for Mac boot screen, installed wifi...

I Got An M3 MacBook Pro; Obsolescence Forced My Hand

Lots of opportunity existed in the past for the HUP (Home Use Program) as well, where you could get a copy of office for $10 to use at home if you used it as an employee of certain agencies. Nowadays, it's only 30% off.
