Advice for diagnosing scsi failure on Quadra 800?

My understanding is that the 53CF96 is not a drop in replacement. Someone posted that the internal registers are fairly different. I haven't dug into the datasheets enough to have first hand knowledge. You are welcome to a few 53C96. I just need to remember to look for them while I'm at...

    ATi FireGL X3 256MB - AGP

If that was teh seller I've been watching for a long while, they wanted 50% more for shipping to the USA than the item cost. 30eu for the cards, but 45eu for shipping and no discount for multiple items bought in one purchase. Still, a great card for conversion to Mac use.

Flash SIL3112 SATA Controller Card for Mac

Your 3112 card must have one of the three supported Flash chips on board. AM29LV040 is one of them. I can't remember the other two. Macronix something or other and can't even remember the third brand. I only remember the AM part number because I have a sleeve of them sitting here from...

What is the best technique to remove SMD ICs ?

Forgot to mention, it is always helpful to apply solder flux to the joints before these operations.

What is the best technique to remove SMD ICs ?

Others will undoubtedly have other, possibly better methods. When I've removed chips from existing SIMMs what I've done is supported the SIMM an inch or so above the surface in an upside down position -- chips hanging from the bottom. (If you have chips on both sides, beats me. Support...

Interesting solution for LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge

Need an icon under the "like" button for jealous. Maybe a green meanie.

Interesting solution for LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge

Extremely lucky. I've been watching them for the past few years. Several years ago, they were in the find in the ditch next to the road category -- or pay enough to make it worth shipping. Not true any more. The AsanteTalk retailed for $100. For the last couple of years the...

Mod: Quadra 660AV 2 MB VRAM Upgrade

@Zane Kaminski ROM Apple part numbers on the Q840AV are 341S0923 and 341S0924. Does the 660AV use the same ROM? If so, I would guess that the chances of success are excellent. I guess they could have programmed in a machine ID branch, but why would they?

    Can’t make this up

I have a gas range/oven from 1969. Not an option for folks who don't have gas in the house. But nothing electric to blow out. The control knobs are all gas valves. Not electrical controls connected to a failure-prone CPU that might or might not agree to operate the range/oven for you...

Upgrading IIsi onboard RAM to 4MB

I've done that many times -- forget to hit "Post reply". I get such a feeling of accomplishment from finishing my thought coherently (I hope) that it never occurs to me that I need to hit the submit button. Or maybe the cat distracts me a critical moment....

Formac G3 ZIF carrier - Repair

Yeah, I've tried paste with no stencil in the past and mostly made a mess. It's made me reluctant to try it with a stencil. I gather that (with stencil) works out better for you? That's a lot of pins to solder by hand, although I expect you'll get into a rhythm and it will go pretty fast...

    SCSI-IDE bridge

I just made arrangements for a couple from a member over on 68kmla. But thank you for the kind offer. No, nothing so ambitious. The Acard adapters have good, solid performance. Since the 7722 converts to a 7726 and is available for about $25 right now, I'm going to steal the bridge chip...

Formac G3 ZIF carrier - Repair

How will you solder the new one in? Paste and hot air, or pencil and one pin at a time? Or something else? Curious. Good luck.

Upgrading IIsi onboard RAM to 4MB

That's wonderful. I guess the designers put in the extra versatility and let the marketing folks decide how to populate it.

    SCSI-IDE bridge

I don't think that will be reproduceable. The Lattice CPLD probably kills the deal. The K5C80 is a Z80 compatible processor made by Kawasaki. ??! I guess Kawasaki builds everything. I loved my '78 KZ1000. The only other notable chip is the 53CF96 which cost about $15 each these days...

    53C80 Experiment

@Kai Robinson But do you have any 343S0182 laying around? :) These are the PCI arbiter chip used with the Bandit (343S0020) on the first generation PCI PowerMacs. I can find the Bandits, but no one seems to have thought that scavenging the associated arbiter was important. Can't use...

Low-cost 3 MB RAM card for Macintosh Classic

:) Can you add break-away tabs on the upper sides so that one can remove them and have a Rocket RAM if one wishes? Red or orange solder mask... :)

Low-cost 3 MB RAM card for Macintosh Classic

Dremel on a stand with a "diamond" cutting wheel might work well too. I cut paired 30-pin SIMM sockets that way.

    Macintosh IIfx explosive RAM

Ah, cool. I often use the tip of a toothpick in situations like that.
