My understanding is that the Iphone5 doesn’t support voice over lte so it can use 4g for data and app use but because it doesn’t support volte it defaults to legacy 3g/2g which iirc are now shut down.

Getting there but Apple supports iphones for quite a while - IIRC my iphone6 got 5 major os releases and 12 shipped with ios14 and we're at 26.6 so has gotten 6 major os updates so far.
