ThinkC [Study Group 0] Getting your Development Environment Setup & Hello, World!

yeah. I wasn't trying to make a case that it was the FIRST c compiler. only that it was a thing at least in 1985. That is, if one wanted to pretend its 1985 and program for this brand new Mac. you could program in C if you wanted.

ThinkC [Study Group 0] Getting your Development Environment Setup & Hello, World!

so this might be interesting. in the first issue of MacDeveloper (link opens to the page) newsletter. there is a review of Aztec c for the mac. it came out in May 1985 . So very early on in the mac life there was discussions about which programing lang to use! we are carrying on that tradition...

    Idaho Apple Haul Hard Drives?

i wonder if archive.org would be interested in them. they do often take in disks to image and archive them. for preservation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://twitter.com/textfiles jason scott talks about doing that kind of thing. but i don't know how interested they are in HDD ...

Massive Vintage Apple Haul in Idaho

FWIW you can also put it in a LC! (pretty much any version...) easier to find those computers and easier to get into and add the card. they are sooo cool to play with. even if you don't have that y cable thing to plug in a disk and joystick.

ThinkC [Study Group 0] Getting your Development Environment Setup & Hello, World!

for me personally. learning c is more interesting because its more portable. maybe if i get better on it on the mac. i can take that knowledge and use it on other platforms easier. (like embedded stuff or on modern computers or whatever)

[Idea] Macintosh 68k Programming Study Group?

agreed. might be best if we just focus on the code and running in system 6/7. and anything outside of that left up to the individual. version control is something outside the scope of learning how to program retro macs..... edit: not to say that people cant ask for help on how to use git or...

    That moment when...

i really like his books. they are of the correct size. (not giant and useless) and what they tell you is very helpful. His compact mac book even talks about useful upgrades as well as actual knowledge of how to fix things. Born out of years of somebody fixing the macs. I highly suggest people...

    That moment when...

i have this book! and yes. its not that great. it is BIG and it is written in a very laymen style. example is exactly right. it will tell you what sadmac error code means bad memory. but it doesn't tell you how to decode the address of the bad memory. I'm also not sure which type of mac it...

    That moment when...

i had a sad mac error on my 128k that didn't match any of the errors. ... it took me way too long for me to admit that it meant that it was reporting 2 bad ram chips. .. and i only realized that when i watched a Branchus video where he fixed a mac 128k with like 2 or 3 bad chips.

A Classic Mac neophyte journey begins.

battery bumbed not worthstanding. I always thought a Mac SE would be a good starter mac to get into the hobby. Its pre a lot of the surface mount caps. So they don't usually cause an issue. and ADB keyboards and mice are easier to find then what a Plus or easier macs use. The Mac SE/30(and...

A Classic Mac neophyte journey begins.

FWIW i will often say a `ADB Keyboard` in a generic way to say what connection the keyboard uses. (vs the phone jack thingie OG macs used or a PS2 keyboard.)

A Classic Mac neophyte journey begins.

NICE, an SE/30 they are pretty popular. The plain SE looks like it should accept 1.44 disks. so thats handy. cosmetically they seem ok. Have you tried turning them on?

How much of the 128K/512K hardware has been reverse engineered?

yeah. the 512ke ROM is basically a plus rom. if you install a romminator in a 128k you basically use plus roms when you do that. you can also just drop in plus roms into a 128k and then you can use 800k drives.
