Can We Crowd Source 3D Models of the InWin A500 I/O Shields?

The InWin A500 and its sibling cases use a proprietary I/O shield design. Instead of snapping in like current ATX cases, or being retained by screws like some early ATX cases, it uses two tabs to hold the shield in place. And although the opening looks big enough to snap a modern I/O shield in...

Getting MIDI to Work on an OASys IPAD...

    The current CONFIG.SYS is as follows: DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 2048 AUTO DOS=HIGH FILES=30 And the current AUTOEXEC.BAT file is a blank file.

Getting MIDI to Work on an OASys IPAD...

So I forgot to try to load EMM386 high, but the parameters “2048 AUTO” only changed the symptoms slightly. DOS 6.22 was able to finish booting, but I started getting general failed errors on C: after a few disk accesses… It’s not the disk (it doesn’t happen when I don’t load EMM386). I’m...

Getting MIDI to Work on an OASys IPAD...

If anyone is interested to review what I did so far, the initial work was dinner on one of my livestreams: https://www.youtube.com/live/ihTtk9-by2A?t=35m0s

Getting MIDI to Work on an OASys IPAD...

Fellow Tinkerers, I have bought one of those DOOM-playing "bump bars". And not content to simply playing DOOM, I want to get MIDI out to work. Since the bump bar was never designed for MIDI out, I have a MIDICloud RS-232 from Serdashop so that I can attempt to use one of the serial ports for...

    Resurrecting an Advantech PCA-6157

Most x86 computers will start to POST with a missing keyboard controller; however, I would expect that it will hang fairly early. The keyboard controller usually controls the A20 gate, and that’s usually a fatal error when the BIOS is unable to control it (as that prevents proper access to...

TashRecorder: a Farallon MacRecorder compatible clone

Thanks to @Mu0n's group buy of PCBs, I was able to build one during my livestream last night. The only issues I had were component fitment issues: the LED had leads that were too short, and the resistors that get mounted parallel to the PCB were too large to fit flat. The resistor issue isn't a...

Apple II clone - screen full of apples on boot

Even though you have a clone, this book might be useful for troubleshooting: https://vintageapple.org/apple_ii/pdf/Apple_II_Plus_IIe_Troubleshooting_&_Repair_Guide_1984.pdf Inconsistent behavior at power on could be a failing 555 timer, as garbage on screen could be that the CPU hasn’t cleared...

Apple II clone - screen full of apples on boot

Maybe it's an early clone without auto-reset capability? In that case, try Reset or Ctrl-Reset. A photo of the motherboard would be helpful so we could see which clone it is (and by extension, which Apple II it is a clone of).

My Macintosh LC Has Normal Volume Error Chimes, All Other Sounds Are Quiet

My Macintosh LC had me stumped. This started as a simple chip swap to replace a dead DFAC chip. Now that I’ve done that, I am now having sound volume issues: The startup chime is quiet. System sounds are quiet, even when I set the volume to 7 in the Control Panel. The sound is quiet from both...

    Benchmark Suggestions Needed!

I have motherboards, processors, graphics cards, and sound cards. I even see how current YouTube creators are currently trying to show how these items compare against others... which is why I would like to know of benchmarks and applications you wish other YouTubers used for their comparisons...

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

The new CPU works in my original system board. I believe the system board seller failed to adequately protect the compression connectors, and one/both were damaged in shipping. They were, after all, protected by pieces of paper. 🤦‍♂️

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

With my original system board, the light bar is red (the white light could be burned out… did SGI use bulbs and not LEDs?). With the new system board, I never see any lights.

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

I thought I should add some photos in case someone spits something that is amiss… Here’s my system model number, a CMNB015ANF250 (it’s one of the “green” Octanes): And the part number of the new system board: Here’s one of the compression connectors from two angles: And the other: And how...

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

First time SGI owner here with no previous experience with the platform... seems like I am jumping in head first as they say. I picked up an SGI Octane from a swap meet a couple weekends ago. It was the base model, but hey, I paid $75. I then found an IP30 030-0887-005 system board on Mercari...

LC III Dyna Corp PSU not playing ball even after a recap

Just saw another thread, with a picture… The opto-isolator is probably U1, U2, or U3. I can’t read the markings on the chips, so I’m identifying candidates by the number of pins on the chip only. Also, another candidate area is the LM393 near the output wires. If that comparator isn’t working...

LC III Dyna Corp PSU not playing ball even after a recap

Double-check that you didn’t accidentally desolder anything… ask me how I know. I’ve heard the opto-isolator is a common failure point in the LC power supplies. I’ve never seen a DynaCorp one in-person, so I don’t know which component that is.

Is it my Logic Boards (IIvx, IIci, Performa 600, and Quadra 650) or my Power Supply (Delta SMP-120EB)?

Update: Sometimes it helps to set a project aside for a few weeks and then inspect your work again… I discovered that I had desoldered the leg of a resistor. The power supply is now functional, I tested it on the Performa 600 Logic board. I guess the relatively low resistances measured on the...
