For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

I, also, like being able to fully control every aspect of the system. If I want to get into some nook or cranny, I should be able to do it without the hardware or the operating system getting in my way. Plus, there's something about the immediacy of older system that modern ones can't...

Macintosh Portable PSI RAM plus ??? Card

Those all look like RAM to me.

Finally entered the world of PAL C64 (via a Kawari VIC-II replacement board)

I'm promised a PAL flat 128 at some point, but I'm happy being 100% NTSC. My main system is a 128DCR with a 1541 Ultimate II. I use a ZoomFloppy with a 1571 for disk management.

    The SCSItron with BlinkyLights

It would be great for getting a rough idea of controller issues. I'd buy one.

Hacking the Interactive Television Box: it's got System 7.1 in ROM

If you have the red ROM for the AITB (Set Top Box/STB), the one that displays on the composite outputs, you can actually hack the unusual form of System 7.1 it includes in ROM. It works great with a BMOW 2MB ROM-inator and a SIMM programmer...

A potato livecam using the C128 VDC and a ComputerEyes

My wife and I had fun doing the video. It may turn up as a gag exhibit at one of the computer festivals I attend in the future. Bonus points: identify what C64 game that particular (1.3x here) arrangement of Yakety Sax came from.

A potato livecam using the C128 VDC and a ComputerEyes

The Commodore 64 ComputerEyes video digitizer can't display live(ish, it's slow scan) video during capture because the VIC-II DMA interferes. So .... let's put the 128's VDC high-resolution chip into low resolution and use that. And then make the capture rate 25% faster...

    The NABU computer

It's an interesting system but (even by the standards of the era) quite limited. You're basically having to start off finding or writing, then burning your own EPROMs, to do anything notable. I love the look of it but it would gather dust in my house. And I say that as someone sitting next to a...

Androda's RAM card works great in prototype Macintosh Portables too

Got Androda's new RAM card and it works great in my DVT prototype Portable (8MB). Decided to post some pictures - including of the early System 7.0 demo presentation it had on its hard disk from the prior owner. https://oldvcr.blogspot.com/2023/06/new-ram-card-prototype-mac-portable.html

Bringing 9.x extensions back to 8.6 (including Radeon 9200 drivers!)

That's ... a bit of an oversimplification. For 9.0 and 9.0.4 that was probably true (especially if you consider CarbonLib "OS X junk"), but 9.1 is actually technically different under the hood (requires an MMU, for one thing, which is why SheepShaver can't run it). It would be more accurate to...

I look forward to the source code! That sounds like a clever solution.

Mac OS System Identifiers discussion thread

Patch the system without modifying the system file? Absolutely. You can alter the vectors in RAM, for example.

    IIgs Expansion Card Recommendations

My GS has a TransWarp, an AI InnerDrive and a GG Labs 8MB RAM card. Thinking about a proper SCSI card or network, though. https://oldvcr.blogspot.com/2020/11/not-refurb-weekend-apple-iigs.html https://oldvcr.blogspot.com/2021/02/the-quest-for-wolfenstein-3d-music-on.html

The KIM-1 that sounds like Stephen Hawking

The KIM-1 was the first 6502-based computer, with 1K (actually 1152 bytes) of RAM and a 1MHz clock speed. It has serial routines, but the DECtalk Express it's connected to as a speech synthesizer (using Perfect Paul, which famously was the basis for Professor Hawking's voice) only talks at...

Radeon 9200 PCI card issues in Beige Power Macintosh G3 w/OS 9.2.2

Probably the best approach, but what about the card wasn't working with the 8500 extension not loaded?

Radeon 9200 PCI card issues in Beige Power Macintosh G3 w/OS 9.2.2

It looks like you have all the necessary extensions. While the 8500 extension shouldn't make you crash, you can just disable it and the card should still work fine.

Crypto Ancienne 2.2: TLS 1.3 in an MPW tool

In addition to an AmigaOS with ixemul port, you can now use carl, a mini-curl clone, as an MPW tool for TLS 1.3 from classic Mac OS. It compiles with MrC. More here: https://oldvcr.blogspot.com/2023/04/crypto-ancienne-22-now-supported-on.html Next step is to make an inetd clone that can run MPW...
