    Macintosh 512k restore

Nice. At least now you know what needs to be done to use the later 590-0167 cable with a black label 800K or a 400K drive.

If the nubus slots are dead on any of the boards you're working on, follow @pfuentes69's advice and replace the 74ALS240 chip below C16 with a new one. Here's his thread: https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/problem-with-iici-and-nubus-cards-solved.317/ -J

Ultrasonic cleaner appears to have killed my Quadra 650 board....

Yep. the 650 boards have both. Same with the speaker headers. I'll have to look at my 650 when I reinstall the hard drive into it and see for sure, but I think the ROM simm slot on it is empty, so it's running on the onboard ROM chips.

Ultrasonic cleaner appears to have killed my Quadra 650 board....

Most 650/800 boards I've come across have had the heatsink that clips onto the socket. I once received a base model Quadra 650 board (4MB RAM, no ethernet, and a 33MHz 68LC040) that had the other style heatsink that clips onto the chip itself. @lobust If you want your Q800 to think it's a...

    Power Mac 6500/250

Cool. Glad it's working. Battery-wise, I'd be tempted to wire up a triple AAA holder and mount it somewhere away from the board. That way, you can use more common batteries to get the 4.5 volts necessary and not have to worry about the stock 4.5 volt alkaline battery deciding to let its acid...

    Power Mac 6500/250

Grab one of those USB to IDE external hard drive cases, then hook it up to the iMac that way. Then, try using Drive Setup on the G4 under Mac OS 9. If it works, then you can swap it in and save the BlueSCSI for another machine. Otherwise, use an IDE internal Zip drive on the IDE/ATA bus, then...

    Dumpster diving is fun

@Alf Torp Nice grab. @Certificate of Excellence My second modern Mac was a Mac Pro 3,1 that a friend of mine found on the sidewalk near his house in late 2014, then gave to me, since he didn't plan to use it. Perfect timing, since that was when the keyboard on my A1181 Macbook died. Used it...

    Power Mac 6500/250

Hmmm, jumpers are set correctly? I do know that Apple's early implementation of IDE wasn't that great. Basically had a requirement of 8GB being the boot partition. Do you have access to a revision 2 B&W G3 or a G4 PowerMac that can boot Mac OS 9? If so, format the drive using that and...

USPS Maimed the G3 Minitower I Ordered on eBay; Questions about Testing/Repair

It's probably fine electronically. Just looks like it went to war. It might be worth checking with Herb at Retrotechnology.com and see if he has the replacement plastics. Show him the pics of the damage, that way, he'll be able to find the pieces you need from his stash of parts. He has some...

    Power Mac 6500/250

The 250GB drive will work, you may need to partition it in Drive Setup to get the Mac to recognize it. Minimum OS requirement is System 7.5.5. With the 250GB drive, you'd need to set up a 2GB or smaller partition to run System 7.5.5 or 7.6.x on it. You can run Mac OS 9.1 without needing the...

USPS Maimed the G3 Minitower I Ordered on eBay; Questions about Testing/Repair

Might be best to keep your eyes peeled for another case. With respect to the retaining clip, you might be able to rebend it and get it attached to the ZIF socket again. If not, leave the computer on its side, so the board is at the bottom, then try to boot it that way. Use the correct version...

    1987 Macintosh Plus (Platinum)

Board did touch, hence the reason the computer randomly rebooted. In any case, once the failed component (or components) is found and replaced, it might come back to life.

Mine survived. Is currently installed in my SE FDHD. Works fine.

    1987 Macintosh Plus (Platinum)

Make sure nothing is intermittently grounding out against the chassis. That exact situation was occuring with my last Plus when I was testing it with a known good floppy drive. If I dare let the drive touch the frame above the board, it would cause the computer to shut down then reboot.

Restoring a Mac SE - My Journey So Far...

I'd keep looking. A couple weeks ago, there were a bunch that were in the $60-$80 range. Another option is to get in touch with Herb Johnson. https://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/m_parts.html $90, plus shipping and PayPal for serviced FDHD drives as well as the correct black label...

Restoring a Mac SE - My Journey So Far...

@RetroJack, grab a couple MP-F75W drives from a later Mac. Install them in place of the 800K drives that are damaged. On a M5010 SE, they will emulate the 800K drives. Then, if you decide to update to the newer ROMs and the SWIM chip, you'll be able to read/write 1.4MB disks.

Looks like the Centris 650's 230MB drive went tits up. So, just conquested a LPS270S on the 'bay from sunnking. Will be installing that as soon as it arrives.
