Workgroup Server 9150 Freezes Without Additional Cooling - Can anyone check their WGS VR temps?

Hello all, I recently did a live stream (link) where I attempted to repair a client's WGS 9150. (120MHz). The symptoms were that the system would freeze after being on for a period of time. The voltage regulator behind the ROM slot had some visible singing of the board, so I decided to replace...

    Quadra 840AV - chimes ... kinda ...

I don't think that would be the case? But my recapped 840AV seems to be perfectly happy with good quality (KMET, etc) tantalum capacitors. Have you tried the board without any drives or accessories plugged in? I know it's a long shot, but I think I hear the hard drive in your video clip. I'd...

    Quadra 840AV - chimes ... kinda ...

I also echo the advice of Bruce, there must be a bad trace somewhere. At least that's my thought. The traces on those boards are silly thin and fragile. Also, because of this, I'd caution the use of an ultrasonic cleaner. You can use it, just be aware that in some rare cases it may damage weak...

Mystery Apple KanjiTalk Font Card (NuBus) [630-0174-A] Does anyone recongize this?

I tried but it won’t boot on the Mac II. I think it’s one version too old, judging by the Mac II’s original software version number (System Software bundle v2.0.1 - which includes System 4.1 / Finder 5.5) and release date of 1987. Also, that system disk doesn’t seem to have the “IIcard” or...

Mystery Apple KanjiTalk Font Card (NuBus) [630-0174-A] Does anyone recongize this?

Thanks to @fogWraith I spent some more time pulling my hair out about this. o_O I switched from my Mac IIx to my Mac II, as the Mac II can run pre-System 6 versions of the Mac OS. This seems to be what the KanjiCard wants installed. Sadly, whenever I have the KanjiTalk NuBus card installed...

Mystery Apple KanjiTalk Font Card (NuBus) [630-0174-A] Does anyone recongize this?

Thanks for the all the information everyone! 😄 It seems like I need the Japanese equivalent of Macintosh System Software 2.0.1 or 2.1 (or similar), this would contain System 4.1/4.x and Finder 5.5/5.x. These would likely have a date of around 1987/1988 to match the release of the Macintosh II...

Mystery Apple KanjiTalk Font Card (NuBus) [630-0174-A] Does anyone recongize this?

I've recently acquired this interesting Apple KanjiTalk Font NuBus card... and I'd love to learn more about what it does and it's purpose, etc. Doing some research, I've found other websites (example from okqubit.net) wondering what this is. I'm assuming it may have something to do with some...

I bought it because it was so funny! But @Adam really wanted it, so I gave it to him. I think he has it set up!

VCF East in Wall Township, New Jersey, USA - April 14-16, 2023

Hello everyone! During the recent TinkerDifferent live stream it was suggested we make a thread for those attending VCF East in Wall, NJ this coming April. Details about VCF East can be found here, and you can check out the Exhibits list here. There is a general admission charge of $25 (1 day)...

    Trenton Computer Festival

Yep! Sadly (as seen in the photos I showed), the vendor area was a ghost town. Apparently they were charging $40 for the tables (although maybe that was for multiple?) Either way, I'm very much looking forward to VCF East this year!

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Well done!! The BlueSCSI 2 is shaping up to be an amazing release... if this infomercial (below) doesn't convince you to get one, I don't know what will. ;)

Mac Classic II won't start, instead purrs

To me it sounds like it's failing to get the power it needs to start up. I would double-check the voltages. Thankfully you can do this easily from the floppy drive port with a multimeter. Bruce has an excellent video (here) that shows the process. If the voltages are in spec, then turn your eyes...

Archiving best practices and breaking the Seal?

My personal issue with losing the resource fork is that it acts as another roadblock for people loading software into the vintage Mac OS via trying to open/mount the disk image. If someone wants to mount a .img/.dc42 on a real Mac (or via an emulator), they'd need to use ResEdit and add the file...

Archiving best practices and breaking the Seal?

For each disk, before inserting it to the drive, I open the shutter and inspect it briefly to determine if I can spot any scratches, dirty, or mold etc. After archiving over 100 disks, I haven't seen too much debris, even on disks from the early 1980's. However, some did have dirt and possible...

Archiving best practices and breaking the Seal?

MFM surprised me too, but I believe it's for the 1.4MB Mac disks. Again the Macintosh documentation for the Kryoflux isn't super detailed. But I think I was using that for 1.4MB disks and "Apple DOS 400K/800K" for 400K/800K Macintosh disks. (I've updated my post to make this more clear, assuming...

Archiving best practices and breaking the Seal?

I just stuffed a folder that contained apps and files to a .sit using DropStuff v3.5, v4.5 and v5.5. Once compressed to a .sit (not using Bin-Hex), I uploaded the files to an FTP and then downloaded them on another Mac. Once unstuffed the resource forks remained happy and the apps launched. Yay?

Archiving best practices and breaking the Seal?

Oh boy, archiving floppies! 💾 Well... *rolls up sleeves*, let me try to shed some light on what I've learned. My apologizes for the book! (There is a TL;DR below) Introduction I'm not an expert, but a lot of smart people have helped me over the years. Please be aware that I'm just typing this...

Solicitation to be considered for the TinkerDifferent Board of Directors

Hello everyone, I'm Steve, I'm one of the founding members of Tinker Different and was the initial President during our forming. For our first full term I held the title of Vice President. I was quite glad to be a part of this community from the start and I hope I can continue to service in...
