Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

Something in the eMate's ROM must be involved here to configure the CL-PS7010 go-between chip properly in terms of which memory and flash driver banks to use. It's a strange architecture, with the CPU not directly connected to RAM or flash (maybe not even ROM). The 7010 supports many banks of...

Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

Talked to my friend who has one of the original dram+flash upgrade modules from 'back in the day'. He says that installing and removing it has not caused a factory calibration error to appear. Just a full data wipe every time. This makes me question whether it's really a one-way upgrade. And...

Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

I doubt that they provided instructions on how to remove the module. Based on what I'm seeing it's a one way process, unless a tool can be written to back up and restore those device configuration blocks. A tool to do the backup and restore might be useful in general. Other people have...

Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

I don't understand the question. Two test modules were installed, by Fizzbinn and another tester. They haven't reported any issues. Installing the module *and then removing it* is what caused the 'factory calibration lost' error for me. And I can't think of a good reason to remove the module...

Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

I have now tried a 'hard reset' on my eMate which gives the factory calibration error. The error persists after hard reset. :( According to this post on NewtonTalk, calibration data is stored in the very first block of flash with a backup in the second block (blocks 0 and 1). A hard reset...

Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

I think it's intentionally a one way process when installing the flash upgrade modules. The system RAM upgrades can be removed with no issues. My guess is that there's something in the firmware which "integrates" the extra flash into the system as a whole. Remember that the Newton is based on...

BlueBird-SD-Module: a boutique build for BlueSCSI in Blackbirds?

Safest is full shutdown to remove the SD card. Depends on whether the drive logic power, motor power, and termination power lines are still powered in sleep mode. If all power sources are disabled then it's the same as being fully shut down. I suppose we could try to build in a mode that can...

BlueBird-SD-Module: a boutique build for BlueSCSI in Blackbirds?

I'd expect WiFi via RaSCSI to work fine in the expansion bay, for the reason you mention. Outside the primary RF shielding. Probably range reduced because it has to shout through plastic. Using the built in networking (aaui) should be substantially faster than any scsi-based solution...

BlueBird-SD-Module: a boutique build for BlueSCSI in Blackbirds?

For what it's worth, the Molex micro SD slot I've been using for awhile isn't a click-and-lock style but I've never had an SD card fall out. My test models have gone through many many card insertion cycles with no issues. Moving the connector around on the PCB certainly isn't the hard part...

    MicroMac Power Workstation

I recently picked up a piece of hardware that can theoretically dump protected GALs (RF-3148), need to find some to practice on. Happy to help if desired, based in the USA.

Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

News on this project: I have designs which work, both DRAM-only and DRAM-plus-flash. This project has been thoroughly weird. As mentioned before, only one of the 10 I assembled (dram plus flash) last time worked at all (the first one, which gave me a false sense of hope). I revised that...

    Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module

Generally speaking, the hybrid and power manager are the cause of a lot of issues. There are plenty of other options though, like corroded traces to RAM and other things.

    Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module

Two hybrid recreations have been claimed by some of our friends in Europe, leaving two available for USA-based testers. DM me if interested.

    Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module

There have been some questions about PCB color for the later production modules. I lean toward green, but can understand that people might want something closer to the original color (blue). What do people think?

    Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module

PCBs arrived early, so I assembled and tested one this morning. It passed testing both on the dedicated test PCB and in a test Portable, which gives me pretty high confidence that it's going to work in general. These will probably not be listed and available for sale until after the conference...

    Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module

PCBs for the first round should be here Wednesday. I'll hope to assemble and test a few before the weekend, it's going to be hectic and then I'm at a conference from the 8th to the 14th.

F4 BlueSCSI, a BlueSCSI Fork By Androda

A new firmware release has just been posted. This one is not a pre-release, it's a full release. No issues were reported in the past month with the snapshot, and I haven't had any issues in testing. https://github.com/androda/F4_BlueSCSI/releases/tag/1.1-2022-07-27 This version is the same as...
