Mac Classic ROM chip - replacement or more troubleshooting? SOLVED

I never joined the Discord, but I have joined plenty of others. . . not sure why I didn’t. I think I will now though. Here’s a closeup of my working custom ROM chip in case it helps. This was before I put a sticker over it:

Mac Classic ROM chip - replacement or more troubleshooting? SOLVED

@cjbrunner I seem to recall ordering the wrong eproms on my first attempt. I dunno what I was thinking, staring at part numbers for a while. The wrong ones where actually the wrong number of pins—an error that I could have easily avoided. And actually, I never ended up needing a ROM since my...

Mac Classic ROM chip - replacement or more troubleshooting? SOLVED

Hiya, Neighbor! Lemme dig around and see what I can find. I am pretty sure I ordered the wrong thing from someone on ebay, then eventually the right thing (both attempts to source a BIOS chip succeeded but I dunno what I was thinking the first time as I had mis counted the pins. Lemme dig...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

I will definitely try to get it working over ethernet or wifi, but having never synced I am pretty sure I needed software packages first to be able to support the card i have. Thanks for the details on Quick Figure. That sounds like what I read but I couldn‘t recall the specifics. Now I know...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

The eMate restoration continues. My last updates here were related to the battery which continues to work fine. My problem was getting the eMate to sync. Having done some troubleshooting now on another thread here: Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response" I now have a working...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

At long last, I have the eMate syncing over serial using NCX on my M1 Mac mini running OSX Sonoma. @splorp it is important to note that NCX does indeed work on this version of MacOS at least. I will need to try again after upgrading to Sequoia. TLDR; I needed the null modem cable and a...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

IT WORKED! Using the diagram in the linked thread above, I was able to create a 8-pin MiniDIN to DE (DB) 9-pin female with a 9-pin cable breakout that had screw terminals. I verified one of my cables was simple a straight-thru so I cut it in half and mapped the pins to wire colors. . . and just...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

Thanks for that link to the macrumors thread. A nice image pasted in there should make testing my 8-pin cable a breeze. I suspect what I have are straight-through which is likely my issue. I don’t have the (DB) DE9 breakout but that could be really handy, as I have a bunch of long 8-pin cables I...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

I don’t know if this helps, but I tried another shorty DB9-MiniDIN8 adapter—maybe from an old Palm cradle. This time, the eMate error said that it failed and to check your cable connection. That is definitely a different error message which is puzzling.

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

I don’t have any indication that it is a null modem cable, but I could check pin continuity with a multimeter. Are you saying that it SHOULD BE a null modem cable? I am definitely familiar with the concept as I grew up with using modems and BBS systems, and doing file transfers between...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

I have an eMac running OS9. I have a Palm USB to Serial adapter. I have a Keyspan USA-19HS USB to Serial adapter. I have a DB9-MiniDIN8 serial cable. Theoretically, I should be able to make a connection to the eMate. Tried the Palm adapter first. Had to install Palm connect software which went...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

Today, I tried connecting my old PB5300cs. This is booting into OS8 off of a PC card Compact Flash adapter. No internal HDD. I also happen to have the Orinoco Gold wifi PCMCIA card for it, so I could at least get it connected to the internet and get files downloaded. After messing with .img...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

Today, I tried the NCX software and my USB-to-serial cable on a pair of older machines: First alternate attempt: Mac Mini (intel 2014) running MacOS Monterey 12.7.6. Same result. I can see the cable fine in NCX software, can select it in preferences, but pressing DOCK on the eMate, choosing...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

@Andy Today I tried to sync the eMate with a few versions of OSX. After several attempts I saw that the battery indicator was getting low so I am plugging it into power. That’s nine days of standby and occasional use for troubleshooting. It’s not a good test of typical usage but it at least...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

Ok. I wish I had the programming experience to help. I did wonder, however why I wouldn’t at least see something using “cu“ at the command line. I guess I don’t have any of the details about the docking protocol, so not sure what I was expecting—probably not “eMate here trying to dock. . .” but...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

It's Monday, and I have been trying to get the eMate to dock with my M1 Mac Mini. I bet I have tried the connection attempt via serial about 30-40 times after various troubleshooting steps. None have worked so far, but I wanted to update you about the battery. The bar has moved to about halfway...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

Some of you may have been following my eMate restoration thread which has been mostly routine, I think. Today, I am trying to make a serial connection to my modern macintosh (M1 Mac Mini running Sonoma 14.6.1. Naturally, I downloaded Newton Connection Version 3.0.2 (67). I don't have any...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Well, it's midday Sunday, and the eMate has been on battery power since Friday morning. The battery indicator is still showing the full bar of power. I see no change in the available power. Of course, it's not like I am using the eMate all day--not even close. But, throughout the day I open it...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

I will add that you could probably get away with vinyl electrical tape to hold the pack together. It won't be as smooth--heck, even I didn't have big shrinkwrap--but if you keep tape layers to a minimum it should easily slide back into the plastic case with the clips, and there's plenty of room...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Hey, thanks for following along. . . Great question. I would absolutely do this again and you have even a little skill with the soldering iron this is pretty simple. I would suggest getting tabbed NiMH cells unless you have a battery spot welder. I considered getting one of those mini ones...
