    6500 Heatsink Upgrade Question

I actually don't know. I didn't put a meter to the pins, but I vaguely remember plugging in a fan into the pins on mine, and no combination I tried made the fan spin up. I could be mistaken though. I don't think Macs had dynamic fan control until way later.

    6500 Heatsink Upgrade Question

I have a Commslot 2 Ethernet card in mine, so it's off to the side. The heat in my machine was a nightmare to manage, but I have it stable. Mine is in a 6360 case, so it's smaller and a bit of a nightmare,G3 CPU card, Voodoo 2 GPU, the box is absolutely stuffed but I managed. A godsend are those...

    6500 Heatsink Upgrade Question

I have a 225Mhz one, and I took the heatsink off of a dead 6360 board and put a fan in the center of it, it works extremely well. Anything you put on there will be better than what was on there from the factory. Beware, PCI cards will decrease proper airflow.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Random note, something I've noticed. I have a USB keyboard and mouse combo, like a trackpad built into the palmist of a keyboard. MacOS9 doesn't recognize the trackpad but can seee the keyboard. This same machine in OSX 10.4 can see and use both. I think some kinda edutainment month thing is...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Right when the PowerPC challenge comes to a close, and my battle with this urine-soaked G4 concludes, someone drops an iMac G3 in my lap. Pristine condition, no pee, everything works. Encore.

Last thing you did with your G5?

Playing UT4K4 and Minecraft. Also GardenTunes. I installed a mod for UT that replaces the monsters with Doom 3 Demons, and I'm having a blast. I also think I would move the Minecraft server to a Raspberry Pi and connect to it, that way I can keep working on this kingdom on other machines. Also...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

I removed the resistor for the fan, so it's spinning at whatever the G4 thinks is good enough. I don't think I've observed the G4 fan spinning any faster or slower at any heat level, it seems to just go at a set speed. I've seen the G4 fan control program before, and that works wonders with my...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Re-creaming the G4 iMac heatsink and heat pipes, as well as letting the fan run at a higher speeds helped quite a bit, but I think the heat management in the G4 iMax is just not great. The system no longer does thermal shutdowns, but the processor runs really hot. Hot enough to steal my...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Mine looks like the attached image. It has 2 points of contact. I re-creamed the contact points, but it doesn't feel like the heat is radiating through the inner chassis properly. The bottom front is hot as expected, but the whole front isn't as warm as I think it should be. I had felt a...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

I think I put the G4 back together wrong, those heat pipes are misalligned with the metal chassis that it sinks its heat to. The system overheats and freezes, I can feel the internal heat pipe and it's extremely hot, and the rear of the chassis was not even remotely warm. A curious thing.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

My cat-pee G4 kept Kernal Panicking, and I couldn't figure out why. I kept looking at the KP log, and it kept saying something like "I wrote something to RAM and looked and it's not there and crashed.". Something like that. It took me WAY too long to figure out that the DIMM and SODIMM sticks...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

I've finally caved and I'm getting a replacement Noctua fan for my G4 iMac. It's quieter than the replacement I have, which the replacement IS indeed a 12v fan, it just spins at an insane RPM. The Noctua comes with in-line resistors, so I can fine tune it if I want, which is splendid. I also...

That is a REALLY good question. I didn't think to check that.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

I'm thrilled. I've been using one of those enzyme cleaners specifically for animal urine, and it's working great. Totally broke down the G4 and wiped down EVERYTHING twice for good measure. I also had to replace the fan inside, because it was absolutely unrecoverable, the smell was horrendous...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

I can't think of anything neat to do with my old PPC Macs, I've been doing some simple website things on a G3 powerbook, I also found a G4 iMac that has a cat pee problem that I'm taking apart and cleaning, but feel like I've done everything with my other Macs. Maybe I'll see if I can get 9.2.2...

    Macintosh Server G3

Does the logic board even have a different identifier of some kind, or is it really just the silkscreened badge? Also, Beige G3s are awesome, hands down my favorite machine.

Once upon a time, I installed a beta version of Windows 3.1 in DosBox, then moved this install to a real NEC V20 machine, and it worked and ran the game Chips Challenge. An 8088 can not run the game because it demands real mode or standard mode, but I saw the game run. I took the instance for...

Putting a 486dx in an Intel overdrive slot

The Idea is simple enough, I have a board with an on-board 486SX-25 and I want to make it a DX2-66. It has an older blue Overdrive Ready socket as well, I tried dropping a DX2 cpu in the socket and the system won't boot. I read that the on board cpu may need to be disabled, which there is no...
