Interview with Bob "Dr. Macintosh" LeVitus

I was always partial to this one! Grabbed this from the Power Computing website back in the day! It wasn't easy for us Mac guys back then, lol. I remember the eye rolls from everyone else in my dorm with shiny new Dells fall of 1996...

    New Defrag Utility in 2026

I humbly suggest "Retrodefragulator" or "Defragulator" for short. Not sure why but inspired by this old gem that popped into my head when first thinking about it! Another random thought, "Contiguous" Going in a different direction... Fatastic Fatabulous Fatdango The Fat and the Furious

    Power Macintosh 475

For those that might be dense like me here's a picture of the 68040 socket, with broken pins, removed. Its just acting as an extender... Can I DM you to pick one up from you? 🤞

    Power Macintosh 475

OMG I get it now! Thank you! ...the black retainer thing is a 68040 socket that is just mechanically connected to the silver pins that go through/are soldered to the board! I had been thinking it was soldered on somehow but this makes so much more sense. I'm cry laughing! Can you point me...

    Power Macintosh 475

But how? I feel like I'm probably missing something obvious but when I look at the card I don't see what replacing all the bottom pins would involve... Do you de-solder each bad pin? If you put an iron on the top silver side, can you heat it up enough to then pull the entire pin up...

    Power Macintosh 475

I still have mine awaiting a fix attempt! Can you expand further on your fix using a 68040 socket?

    LC575 computer killed LC520 motherboard! 😭

I have a Performa 575 and have successfully used both 520 and 550 logic boards in it with no problem, boards that I normally use(d) in my Color Classic. I don't think it's a fundamental incompatibility but I see how it could be some issue with your particular 575 chassis "killing" logic boards...

Comparing the Performance of a 6200 against the 6100

Oh sorry about that, please feel free to do so! …oh wait you mean I did say it was okay awhile ago! lol, yeah I forgot. Love your site, so many interesting articles!

My next guess would be the logic board needs a recap...

    LC 520 with flaky CRT

Just to double check as folks often don't know this but the LC 520's rear power switch being switched on will not start the Mac, you need to also press the power key on a connected ADB keyboard.

At quick glance I see a resistor bodge on my 1994 Thunder/24 card that my 1993 card does not have, on the IC above the 40MHz crystal:

I see the same IC pins bridged on my two working Thunder/24 cards (1993 v2.0.0a and 1994 v3.0.0 ROM versions).

Can't wait to replace the SCA drive in my Quadra 605 with this! ;-)

    BlueSCSI Ultra & Ultra Wide

Great stuff! I see there are other cool improvements in the new "Ultra" hardware design but wondering if performance wise you could expect the same/very similar performance as BlueSCSI v2 with a Pico2 (and with Ultra SCSI Fast20 OverClock) as it uses the same RP2350 chip? Do the SD Card...

    PowerBook 100 & 170 owners

From that Macintosh Portable and PowerBook: ADB Mouse Q & A 3/93 TIL article I took it to mean that the longer plug was to include a "ferrite EMI filter" that was somehow deemed required for low power, and or mobile use "to meet EMC standards". Not sure why those standards are different from the...

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

I had some similar trouble with the Polar Retro Platinum PLA on my BambuLab A1 mini. I've been successful in my last few prints using the "Generic PLA" profile and slowing down the initial layer print speeds by ~half.
