It's funny this thread just got bumped, because I've realised lately that I don't have any grails anymore. I think I've owned or at least worked on every machine I've always dreamt about :(
I did the resistor mod just to see what it was like before modding the analog board for 640*480, and it was definitely too limiting in my opinion. With a 33MHz 68040, you're opened up to a much wider range of games and software that will run smoothly, many of which won't display correctly or in...
And with how many cracks and chips were in that LC575 case to begin with, I wouldn't feel bad about hacking it up. I've still yet to see one in person that didn't have at least one of those top corners chipped (where the faceplate meets the rest of the case).
That was my reasoning for not going ahead with a Takky mod on my Performa 275 a few years ago, I've always hated destructive case mods even when the external effects are negligible. In saying that, I ended up getting rid of that machine even after Mystic modding it because I just wasn't using it...
A fantastic book by a fellow Australian, it's impressive how many people Richard Moss managed to get in touch with for these interviews. I keep my copy right next to my 512Ke where it belongs!
A 5x86 should be able to run most of my favourite DOS games, almost all of which have already been mentioned. Here are a few others:
Star Wars Dark Forces
Rise of the Triad
Blood
Hexen
Street Figther II Turbo (honestly a fantastic port)
The Secret of Monkey Island
I'm happy to see IBM compatible forums now, I was going to suggest them but didn't know how much interest there would be on a mostly Apple-centric site. I thought I'd help kick off this section by showing one of my favourite 8088 PCs.
I was lucky enough to find this machine on eBay in 2019, it...
Removing RF shields wasn't a problem for me until I started using a short-range composite to UHF transmitter to more easily display one machine/console across multiple CRT TVs. Really regretted it then!

That could work, I was thinking even simpler than that: one for TVs and one for monitors. However I'm not sure how well regular TVs fit into the forum in general if it's meant to be about computers.
Yes, that was my thinking. Mostly because there are plenty of CRTs out there that aren't made for specific computers but are compatible with them, eg. a composite monitor can be used with most 8-bit computers, so which sub-forum would it go in?
I'm not sure how into CRTs the rest of you are, but I find myself working on them almost more often than the computers they go with! Would be cool to be able to show and talk about some of the weirder ones I've got, and see all of yours.
These Indextrons are notorious for that, hopefully it's not too late to save. They're so tightly packed inside that the capacitors have zero room to breathe, they all fry each other.
Nice! I've got the VDR-1A version of this card, do you know if there's a way to get it to output 640*480 at 31KHz? Mine refuses to do anything but 35KHz unless I bump up the resolution, it turns out the original Mac monitors can sync to that horizontal frequency which I was previously unaware of.
Beautiful work! It looks surprisingly authentic, well done. I've always wanted a IIe with the GS kit installed, there's something less charming about the IIGS form factor.
