I want to make sure I understand this. Are you saying that the 8mm lens is capturing a much larger area than it needs to, and that effectively the area surrounding the frame is digitally cropped leaving only the desired image. But in doing so, a large portion of the sensor's captured image...

Can you quantify the improvement with the lens modification? I think I'm inclined to just go with the firmware upgrade and leave the lens as is.
