In January, I picked up a 2nd Acrylic ASD 17" from the UofMN ReUse center when the discount was 80%, so $6 again.
I stopped by Free Geek Minneapolis and there was a DVIator on the FREE shelf. Nice grab, the last one I got from Free Geek was in the $1 bin, and it failed to work for me. Seems to be different versions as one has long cables and one has short.
I found a couple reference sites where someone built their own hacked together version. An open source version including VGA is also available. I used their pinout diagram to continuity test both of these. Some discrepancies were found, but the rest pinged good.
After looking at what was connected on the DVIator and what was missing (DVI-D Dual Link), I guessed that when I tried my first DVIator with my home-built PSU, I was using a source that was possibly DVD-D Dual instead of Single. So I pulled the G4 15" with DVI port to test them both again.
Success with my HP laptop power supply and BUC converter to 28v. Both DVIators are working fine with older equipment. My first test was with a 2011 MacBook Pro and a Mini-DP to DVI-D adapter, which likely put out DVI-D Dual.
The new to me 2nd monitor fired up fine, but the power light is blinking short-short-long.
I have these LED strips with inverters that were purchased for a couple of the 12" iBooks that I didn't use. Has anyone ever tried replacing the CCFLs with LEDs in an Apple Studio Display? These look to be barely long enough, but guessing they will work if I can get the inverter pinout to work.
