Levco MonsterMac working, then not working

Howdy,
I acquired a Mac 512k with a Levco MonsterMac/SCSI upgrade.
After fiddling with it a bit I got the RAM working (2mb total) and the external SCSI working (booting to 6.08).
The internal SCSI did not work, I think because the cable was/is damaged at the connector.
After deciding to reassemble everything, I have managed to not only reverse my gains, but produce a checkerboard screen.
I've tested the AB with another 512K board and it works fine. I've checked the voltages and they are good.
I've used the troubleshooting guide from the Dead Mac Scrolls to 'reseat' the board connection, reseated the cpu connections, and checked the programmers switch and the reset button.
Knowing the AB is good, is this a memory problem? I have seen numerous posts that memory errors on the 512k produce sad mac errors and only one post that suggests the checkerboard could be created by a memory error on this machine (512k).
Especially frustrating is my ability to take a working system and FUBAR the whole thing in the span of 5 minutes...
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
