Melted (?) chip in Power Mac G4 MDD SuperDrive

Working on a SuperDrive that has no signs of life whatsoever, pulled from a G4 MDD. I confirmed it is receiving the proper voltages from the PSU.

After pulling it apart, there is one IC (pictured here) that looks as if it's burned/melted. Quite odd, as everything else inside the drive looks normal, including the caps. The drive mechanism sits above this when the drive is assembled, and it looks fine.

Anyone know what this chip does (guessing it must be pretty critical)? Couldn't find much info on Google.

Pretty sure the MediaTek MT1616E has something to do with the laser pickup. Proprietary though so no datasheet was ever available.

Interesting, thanks. Doesn't seem like that would totally kill the drive but maybe it's at least part of the problem.

It looks to me like a short occurred internally in the chip and melted the plastic from hte inside.

One of those discolored leads goes to what is almost certainly a bypass capacitor, so that's probably a power pin and one of the other pins is on an extremely short lead and looks like it may be a ground connection. If the short has not burned out, it could be preventing the rest of the board from powering up.

I'd agree with that, since there is no other damage inside the drive. Also seems to be consistent with the current (dead) state of the unit. New drive has been ordered so hopefully problem solved...
