First off, the username: It was dreamed up when I was mashing random words together way back in 2008 because I guess someone didn't like my Xbox Live gamertag and I had to change it, and wanted something unique, and exxodium is what I came up with. (And to this day, that's STILL my gamertag.) Xodium became the shortened version, though unfortunately it seems like these days it isn't as unique as it once was (been running into a LOT of "username already taken" errors in places. Guess my name is pretty cool. Ha.) And no, for the millionth time, it is not a Yu-Gi-Oh reference. (I get that a lot. Way too much.)

How I got into this: I started kinda messing with computers more and more when I was 12 or so (am a early 30-something now). One of my friends gave me an old Macintosh LC they got from the school district (this was early 2001 or so) and unfortunately that machine gave up. The friend who gave me the LC said they knew someone who was good with computers, introduced me to them, and I was taken under their wing and taught the ways of working computers. Eventually that friend upgraded me to a Power Mac 8100, and finally a 9500 with a G3 in it. What a time that was.

Also in the process of all this, I took on a volunteer gig alongside these friends working for a computer recycler (ACCRC, or Alameda County Computer Recycling Center, if you're curious) building up older Macs to be donated to schools. We're talking like late 68k and earlier PPC machines. I also remember at the time Apple was being particularly stingy about letting us install Mac OS onto those machines but relented and said "you guys can use 7.6 and no newer unless the machine requires it." Even getting to that point was a time, if I remember correctly. The PC side of things just got SuSE Linux, if I recall. But I never touched that side of things, heh. But rebuilding a bunch of those vintage Macs is where I cut my teeth big time on working with vintage machines.

That's most of what keeps me motivated these days with regards to vintage Macs: Reliving the life I wished I could have lived back then. Fawning over things like Quicksilver G4s and beefy video cards that would always be out of reach because 13 year old would NEVER be able to afford them. Same goes for iPods and other things, I collect them and work on them to step into my past for a bit and remember the good 'ol days. (Especially of when computers were more upgradeable and repairable. Like Action Retro's Power Computing. Man oh man. I wish we could go back to when you got some serious mileage out of computers.)

Haven't really gone terribly far in all those years either. Still in California, about a stone's throw away from the south Bay Area/San Jose and such. As for things like social media, I like to screech about things over on twitter, and I also do some photography on the side, as well. That's about the extent of it for the most part. OH WAIT I'M WRONG I guess I should also toss my YouTube on the pile, as well. Warning: You will be bored. I guarantee it. Ha.
