I got my first Oric-1 in 1983, driving from Perth to Melbourne across the Nullabor .. a Christmas present from a well-connected family member who knew the Australian distributor. On the drive back home, in every hotel, I booted up that Oric-1 and taught myself to code.
I've got a pretty fat Atmos rig by now, and also a Telestrat in the collection.
There is so much great stuff going on with Oric at the moment - just in case, here's list of things a new Oric owner should know about:
1.
http://oric.org - This is all Oric software, ever. Please register, get logged in, and contribute. The comments are awesome, and you will find the "Top 100 Software" very, very fun. Keep an eye out for Twilighte titles, as well as some of the classics of the 80's - the Oric had - *and still has* - its good stuff!
2. SD card and Tape/ROM peripherals are available, and once you add storage to an Oric, it becomes a very, very capable machine[1]. Look for Erebus and Cumulus and Cumana Reborn, or just check this thread:
3. Defense Force is the ultimate Oric destination, for devs and Oric hackers, alike. We've been going strong there for decades, have quite a few heroes and tributes and many other interesting things going on there.
4. Oric has won the BASIC 10-LINER competition for the last two years. It has been awesome to see it trump all other platforms on this brilliant, community competition.
Here are two Oric 10-liners that will give you arcade-level MOON LANDING and SNAKE TEMPLE games .. (arcade-like lunar lander and dungeon crawler!!)

Check out RAX other little games (he is awesome) on page 5 of this thread:
Keep an eye out on this competition, we Oric people are proud of our #1 position and are motivated to defend the platform every year!

[1] - I'm lucky enough to have, in the middle of an already well-stocked Oric shelf in my collection, another well-kitted and much loved/cared-for floppy-based Atmos rig that had been used by a motorbike club for 30 years .. for their member database, tucked away in a race-track shed .. but that's a thread for another time.
