Yes. You may have to make some adapters to align the mount holes. I have mounted a SATA slot load thin drive from an aluminum iMac into my cube with a SATA to IDE adapter. if you have a 3D printer, see attachment for slimline/laptop style slot load drive.
I had fair success refurbishing non ejecting drives in my Cubes. The main issue is not in the elastic bands which become hard and slippery and ultimately loose, but in the similar issue affecting the ejection roller. After cleaning it thoroughly, lightly sanding off the hardened skin, I could recover a good deal of functionality. Say enough to be able to pick the disk out of the top slit before it gets swallowed back in.My eyes are on this thread, Mark, because I too have a late 2009 27" iMac with internal Apple DVD drive and the drives in m G4 Cubes won't eject (even though they are good otherwise).
