Append Mac graphics representations to "smileys" menu and both become possible. Posting "fun smiley" responses would be even easier to scroll thru, eliminate "x others" identifying interested members and bring "buried" thread back up to p.1. a random mix of both in topics might work?

Cheers!

Well, that's a fun idea! Now we need a Picard "Data, make it so." smiley!

@Trash80toG4
I respect you and your option greatly. Please know that. And thank you for making time to express your thoughts in detail here. I read everything you wrote and appreciate your having shared that.

My own opinion is that smilies and emojis have so little to do with the problem that it’s really insignificant. Part of the issue is that apathy and the lack of enthusiasm is a problem everywhere. Getting people motivated as hard. Prying people away from something they are used to is hard.

So why is that the other forum is more effective at keeping a certain category of people motivated? My personal opinion is that the other forum is focused exclusively on its forum. In contrast, we have this forum and a Discord too. Huge difference!

A surprising number of people dwell exclusively in our Discord and not in the main form. I myself am just the opposite. I am exclusively on the main forum here.

Why do I choose the main TD forum over our Discord? My main reason is because I don’t want my posts and projects to go into a black hole ignored by Google search. That is huge for me.

That’s also why I got so upset in the past when they had drive crashes (especially the Tom Levens era) and a huge amount of my time and effort to create countless forum posts was wiped away forever. Not only was my time wasted, but I now have no ability to reference my own past content, which was very important to me because I’m a forgetful person and I would like to link to that content.

I want people to be able to find my content, and Google search is one huge way they do that. When I post in the main forum, it’s picked up on Google and I like that. And avoiding data loss is central to our forum, and so far, since our inception, we’ve not had a data crash resulting in any lost data at all. No major downtime to speak of either.

My second reason for avoiding Discord is generational. I’m 55 years old and I like traditional forums and I’m not into real-time chatty style experiences that are what Discord is all about.

Interestingly, our main forum really doesn’t have a problem with strife or trolls, and more of that happens on the Discord. I can’t help but chuckle at that while pondering the definition of the name “discord“ itself. Think about it. “Harmony” would have been a more positive sound name, perhaps. But that’s just me overthinking names, I guess.

Naturally, people who like Discord are going to disagree with me quite strongly, but that’s okay. Our board made the decision to add a Discord for their own good reasons, and because our board is comprised of community members, I need to accept that and I do. It is possible to respect people and at the same time not agree with them on every single point. No two of us agree on everything. I also realize that not everyone is my clone and that’s a good thing.

Regardless of whether one is for Discord or against, I think it does distract attention from our main forum, and that distraction is perhaps what you’re seeing when you compare our main forum to that other forum.

Again, that other forum doesn’t have a Discord and therefore it’s 100% focused on its main forum. That is going to give people the impression the other forum is more active than ours, even though the total activity on our main forum plus the activity on our Discord may be the same or even more at times.

I personally want more people to use the main forum. I don’t mind if they use Discord, but I think they should participate in the main form too. I don’t want to see a future where a Discord server replaces our main forum. At the same time, I’m not going to be around forever and it’s going to be up to the community in the future (whoever sits on the board) to decide what happens and what doesn’t.

For now, each, and every one of us have the obligation to make the most of what we have. And when the other forum is down, people who use that forum typically just wait around rather than posting on this one, which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

To me, it’s not hard to decide to post here, especially because we, unlike the other forum, allow you to EDIT your posts for as long as you like. That too is huge. It’s earth shatteringly huge.

If more people post in our main forum, it makes a huge difference. We have provided the WAY. It’s now a matter of everyone out there to provide the WILL.

And just when you thought I was done talking...

🤪

Seriously, I really cannot emphasize enough the importance of our Board. I know full well there are people from that other forum lurking in this thread when that forum goes down, so I wish to drive that point home especially for them to ponder.

Anyone remember Cubeowner? If you participated there, you know why my eternal AVATAR is what it is.

Sadly, it's now defunct. Laurie Duncan (aka MacSamurai Consulting) gave it life and ran it. That is, until the day she decided to suddenly end it. Problem is, the Internet Archive doesn't have a fully accessible backup. You can access the index and a tiny select few complete threads. But pretty much all of my content is gone, although you can spot "JDW" in some of the main forum pages if you look long enough.

Yes, I've contacted Laurie privately about getting the forum resurrected (sadly, her Instagram, since no other means of contacting her seems to get through). She no doubt retains the content on hard drives somewhere out there. But she never replies back to me, and it's 100% clear she refuses to hand it off to someone else.

Why do I care? Because Cubeowner was the SINGLE BEST G4 CUBE RESOURCE on the internet, PERIOD. The loss of all my content there, not to mention the famous GeneHack and countless others is a human tragedy.

My point in saying all is to drive the point home that one person (or one guy and his server guy) isn't adequate to ensure data access.

Our Board was created so no one person could bring down YOUR CONTENT. Posts made by you in this forum are technically YOUR POSTS, hence the lack of limits by us on you when you need to EDIT your posts.

Even though we are structured very well as a forum, we still need to be vigilant because it's hard to get people to run for open board seats. Have a look here today (March 25th USA time)...

Three open seats but only two people who have put names into the pot. And nominations end today.

So even our forum needs help from the community. But relative to one person owning a forum and having the means to KILL IT at any time, having a Board comprised of multiple people is better.

I am SUPER PASSIONATE about having access to important information resources. WE ALL SHOULD BE. And that's why I generally love Internet Archive, and why I cry many tears when I find so much content missing or inaccessible there.

Here's my request...

If any of you have been active on this forum over the last 6 months and in good standing, and if want to make a positive difference in life, please consider casting your name into the pot for a board seat. We need you.

I privately contact forum members at times to encourage them to consider running for a board seat, and sometimes they go for it, but other times not. But I know there are a lot of you folks out there who love our TinkerDifferent forum, so please consider sitting on the board for a time and making a dent in our universe. I want to see this forum exist in some form a hundred years from now, long after I'm gone.

Presuming I am still active the next time it comes around, as I am short several months now, I will consider it! Noob that I am, but I will grow.

A decent amount of it is the same annoying people crapping on as many people as they can manage with their "Holier than thou" attitudes, which drives me insane.
There's like two annoying people there and the rest are some of the best and most knowledgeable people I've met. I wish they'd just deal with the couple pretentious sarcastic people so we'd all have less trouble. I've reported the one worst offender's posts probably half a dozen times over the past two years but nothing ever happens.

As for the site being down again, they've posted about it on their Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/68kmla.bsky.social

I wanted to give shout outs to a couple folks in particular, and I know I am missing a few more. @Volvo242GT has given me helpful advice and help on both forums, and his presence here helped cement my wanting to hang around, @JDW has been super helpful here and on Youtube via messaging/comments, @phunguss provided me a lot of encouragement early (with Likes, with the fun Mac Smileys, etc.) on when I first showed up and knew absolutely nothing other than I had owned Macs for years and was feeling nostalgic about some of my older machines, @Bolle , @Kai Robinson , @Nixontheknight, @eric all also provided support, likes, advice or even access to needed parts! Some are on both forums, some just here. I don't think lack of traffic and engagement is about Likes/smileys. If anything, @phunguss 's, @Nixontheknight 's (just remember those as the first two) and others' likes of my initial posts, where I felt really silly and new, helped me to feel welcomed, which was a big deal. Interesting about the Discord. My local Treasure Valley (Boise) vintage club TVVCC.org uses Discord primarily, and I am gettin used to it, but I still prefer the traditional forums, and how information gets organized in that format. I bet if we just keep posting and supporting new members, the place will grow and thrive just fine.

This is all from the perspective of a relatively new member, only a couple months, and I hope it is helpful in thinking about inviting and keeping others, including their participation.

While I'd love to see folks use our vastly more reliable forum instead, I do understand why people like the other forum while also liking ours.
Lack of activity on the forums here...

On that topic, I recall a conversation over on 68kmla about why some of us prefer that forum - I think not co-incidentally that it was immediately after the last time the site went down...

I signed up to TD I think quite early and posted here a bit at the time, but I gradually returned to 68mla and rarely visit this forum anymore.

The reason I effectively abandoned this forum is that the members of TD by and large seem to gravitate towards the discord channel and leave the forum to stagnate. Discord IMO is a very transient platform, and unless you are an active participant in a conversation that conversation is effectively lost to the sands of time as soon as the focus shifts. It's a great social platform, but a very poor information platform.

Just joined. Hoping the other forum gets back online. Seems like a few members have migrated here too.
There you are! Was looking to see if you were here. Will DM on our stuff! Folks, this was one of the deals that got lost for a minute, that I was in the middle of when things went down.

Seems like it works better to communicate more locally like the local Boise area vintage club. Probably less so as an encyclopedia of knowledge and lasting discussion platform.

This, absolutely. It makes Discord pretty much useless for my purposes and needs - though I appreciate that's only important to me, not everyone or even anyone else. I use TD as a resource to research and keep track of useful information/ideas/snippets, and Discord's social media model is not useful for that, nor appealing to the way my mind functions.... or doesn't.

As to 68Kmla, it thrives because it contains a wealth of useful information, and not just helpful members, but active helpful members. I think it's quite badly run, and would benefit from wider 'ownership', but that's why I'm here and not there. I wish it well, and hope @3lectr1c is right and it comes back online, because that wealth of information is a genuine treasure trove.
