Strage.. It should have worked with a cable. You only need the LocalTalk boxes when connecting more than two devices. Maybe your driver IC was already faulty at that time?

Stop!! That‘s the 26LS30, not 26LS32! It‘s the serial driver IC. You need to get these second hand. Did you overload your serial ports once?

This is unlikely.. Have you tried booting with System Extensions disabled (by holding the Shift key during startup)?
