Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Glad that you were able to make this work... Thanks for sharing! Also, from your first photo, I see that you replaced 3 of the 4 posts with what appear to be metal rollers... How have they affected the film transport experience for you? Where did you acquire them?

Perhaps they also upgraded the lens in Type D units? And/or the stock Type D firmware has been modified from A-C's to capture a wider FOV?

Yes, notice the "T" and "B" lettering that @0dan0 helpfully included in his design. Also, if you have trouble focusing with the bottom piece height that you depicted, then try 1 of the other 2 heights that he helpfully shared here. Or if you prefer a single-piece design, you could try the one...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I've seen this bug, but I didn't bother reporting it because it only happened once and I couldn't repeat it. Anyway, the workaround is simple enough: restart the unit. That said, if you are able to find and fix the bug, then you rock, as always!

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Hi @0dan0 -- I have a couple observations / questions about the ISO / exposure algorithm. v7.1 - v7.5: During capture with my 'C' unit, the highest ISO / exposure that I observed was ISO 200 / ~5970µs. I never observed an ISO of 400 during capture, even with a black image. Is that behavior...

I like the transparency of idea #1... It will likely lead to many folks buying a 12mm macro lens (I have mine, but I still need to install it). I have mixed feelings about idea #2... I like that any scaling artifacts would be eliminated for 12mm lens users at 1440x1080. I also like that it...

@0dan0 Thanks again for implementing my prior feature request (in-capture exposure lock) so quickly. If you are still accepting feature requests, then I have another one: in-capture adjustment of the blue and red channel gain. After you provided in-capture adjustment for the green channel, the...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

@0dan0 I also have a type C unit that I intend to lens-modify using the recommended 12mm lens from RMA Electronics (ordered and shipped Mon 12/1), 7mm extension ring and lock ring from m12lenses.com. I printed the lens offset v13 that you posted November 15th with the hope that it would work...

I second your motion to leave the Qp functioning as-is... I am happy with it bouncing between 17 and 20, even when it infrequently crashes. Regarding jitter, I have only seen it on the bottom of the frames, and only from the very beginning of a scan. For me it is a mechanical issue, not a...

@0dan0 Thanks so much for continuing to share the results of your tinkering with this group. Your new settings control with on-screen brackets is a brilliant solution to the "minimal button" problem! The new Qp control worked well for me at the "best" level of 15 on the roll I tested (using the...

@0dan0 - playback broke with v4.0: V3.0 16 Feb 2025 On-device movie playback works with this version. V4.0 18 Feb 2025 BUG INTRODUCED: On-device movie playback is now broken... Perhaps this is a result of moving 1 of the 2 image buffers lower in memory??? As I mentioned in an earlier post, my...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

@ThePhage Sorry to hear about your issues scanning 7" reels. I only have 3" reels to scan, so I don't have any 4 GB file size concerns. However, I also had the device "freeze" during a 3" reel scan once... I can live with that, because it hasn't done it since. Regarding the random jitter issues...

That's definitely good news about the 12mm lens being a match, but bad news about the 16mm lens. @0dan0 Do you still have any hope of finding a lens that could get good focus, good coverage, and good resolution, given the short focal length of the Reels' design?
