Keystrokes for 68k and PPC Macintosh Systems

On Boot
Those keystrokes should be pressed at start-up (boot) time. All letter keys are lowercase.

Mouse Button
Ejects a floppy disk at startup.​
C
Force certain Macs (PowerPC, 68030, and 68040) to startup from the CD-ROM drive instead of the internal hard drive.​
D
Forces the internal hard disk drive to be the startup device.​
N
Hold down until the Mac logo to attempt boot from the network server (using BOOTP or TFTP).​
R
Force PowerBooks to reset the screen.​
T
Put the firewire-equipped Mac in firewire target disk mode.​
Z
Attempt to boot using the device alias zip from the first bootable partition found.​
Command
Boots with Virtual Memory turned off.​
Option
Starts without Finder windows open. On Macs with New World ROMs, it brings up the open firmware system picker.​
Command-Option
Rebuilds the Desktop.​
Command-Option-I
Force certain Macs (PowerPC, 68030, and 68040) to read the CD disc as an ISO-9000 formatted disk.​
Command-Option-Shift-Delete
Forces your Mac to start up from its internal CD-ROM drive or an external hard drive.​
Command-Option-Shift-Delete-#
Forces your Mac to startup from a specific SCSI ID # (#=SCSI ID number).​
Command-Option-P-R
Erases parameter RAM if held down immediately after startup tone.​
Command-Option-T-V
Forces Quadra AV machines to use TV as a monitor.​
Command-Option-X-O
Forces the Mac Classic to boot from ROM.​
Command-Option-A-V
Forces an AV monitor to be recognized correctly.​


After the Happy Mac icon
Those keystrokes should be pressed RIGHT AFTER the Happy Mac. All letter keys are lowercase.

Control
Break into MacsBug as soon as it is loaded.​
Shift
Disables all extensions, INCLUDING MacsBug.​
Space
Causes Apple's Extension Manager (or Conflict Catcher) to appear during startup to allow you to change your extensions.​
Shift-Option
Disables all extensions, including MacsBug, EXCEPT MacsBug.​


After Start-Up
Those keystrokes should be pressed AFTER start-up (boot) time. All letter keys are lowercase.

Power
Brings up the Shutdown/Sleep/Restart dialogue box.​
Command-Control-Power
It forces a Power Mac to reboot.​
Command-Control-Option-Power
It forces a Mac to quit all applications and shut down.​
Command-Option-Escape
Forces the front most application to quit.​
Command-Power
Drops a Mac into debugger mode (if MacsBug is installed).​
Command-Option-Power
It puts late-model Power Macs and PowerBooks to sleep.​
Command-Y
Ejects a floppy or CD without leaving a disk image behind.​
Command-Shift-1
Force ejects a floppy disk from the first floppy disk drive (internal).​
Command-Shift-2
Force ejects a floppy disk from the second floppy disk drive (external or the second internal such as the Mac SE).​
Command-Shift-3
Takes a picture of the desktop (requires System 7.6 or later).​
Command-Shift-4
Takes a picture of a specific desktop area (requires System 7.6 or later).​


Application Specific Keystrokes
Those keystrokes should be pressed within the application. All letter keys are lowercase.

Conflict Catcher
P

This key pauses the loading of extensions.​
Space or Caps Lock
Launches Conflict Catcher during startup.​
Command-Period
Skips the remaining extensions that haven't been loaded.​
Command-R
Forces the Mac to Restart while extensions are loading.​
Command-S
Forces the Mac to Shutdown while extensions are loading.​

RAM Doubler
~(Tilde) or Escape

Disables RAM Doubler at Startup.​

Apple System Installer
Command-Shift-K

Offers a clean install option during System Software installation (System 7.5 and earlier).​

Claris Emailer
Command at launch

Bypasses specified startup connections.​
Option at launch
Brings up rebuild options.​
