Tecmar Mac Drive (10 MB) A serial hard drive?! (The first Macintosh external hard drive)

The rubber gel-filled shock absorbers used in my HyperDrive kit have done well through the years, as you can see in these photos: The drive is completely suspended by them. That was an appropriate measure to take to protect those extremely sensitive and expensive drives at the time. But...

Tecmar Mac Drive (10 MB) A serial hard drive?! (The first Macintosh external hard drive)

Really? SCSI? If you don’t have an ancient PC that might me able to extract data from it, I’d suggest reaching out to Adrian of Adrian’s Digital Basement because I know he has such a setup and he might be able to extract data from it if you ship it to him. Packing it to avoid damage will be...

MacSE analog board issue – squished video, flyback overheating

Anything connected to that BU406 transistor is a candidate for possibly being bad if the transistor dies and fries, but that appears not to be the case in your machine. It should be simple enough to desolder that resistor and test it though. Don’t rely on your “beeper mode” (continuity mode)...

Tecmar Mac Drive (10 MB) A serial hard drive?! (The first Macintosh external hard drive)

I highly doubt the caps are the reason, but full disclosure, I did recap the drive mechanism in my HyperDrive Mac, in addition to its dedicated secondary PSU. But I had no issues with the HyperDrive kit prior to that Not sure the lack of head movement is the issue. I don’t think there is any...

    HD20 PSU problems

Below are my two videos on the recapping and testing of that PSU. The only issue I had was with one capacitor that had ESR too low, and buying one with slightly higher ESR resolved it. But even with the low ESR cap, the power supply did work. Voltages were normal. So I must assume that...

Tecmar Mac Drive (10 MB) A serial hard drive?! (The first Macintosh external hard drive)

I vividly recall seeing the "Tecmar Sweetens Apples" full page ads in my early MacUser magazine issues back in the day. I recall thinking, "Man that thing is massive!" even back then. But, Steve, after seeing your photos, that thing looks even bigger! 😅 I have a GCC HyperDrive 10MB kit...

Floppy EMU- suddenly mounting three images at once

Both ROM chips and the SWIM (or IWM on the 800K drive version Motherboard) should be socketed like this... If you have a mix of ROM versions and have a SWIM and IWM, just put a sticker on each chip and mark what is what before you start swapping. That's easier than looking up the part...

Floppy EMU- suddenly mounting three images at once

I have the Performer and WarpSE (prototype) and never had that behavior when using my FEMU on my SE. It seems you have more than one SE motherboard and different experiences with each. The ROM and SWIM (or IWM) are all socketed, so you may wish to try swapping out those chips to see if it has...

    Anyone refurb 400K Floppy drives?

I contact Thomas Andrews exclusively via Facebook Messenger and I never have issues reaching him.

    Anyone refurb 400K Floppy drives?

I see what you wrote in that other forum today, and you handled it nicely. 👍 I never tried to contact Thomas on your behalf only because I assumed he would reply to you, but do let me know if you ever want to persue his services because I can reach out to him about your contact attempt.

MacSE analog board issue – squished video, flyback overheating

In the Resource section, I cannot find the "Mac Classic & SE" book that I linked in my previous post, but I do see these "related" PDFs... https://tinkerdifferent.com/resources/apple-technical-procedures-macintosh-se-and-macintosh-se-30.66/...

    Anyone refurb 400K Floppy drives?

I saw you were getting hassled in “that other forum” today. Some people are in serious need of tact. Just wanted to follow-up to see if Thomas Andrews worked out.

MacSE analog board issue – squished video, flyback overheating

The BU406 (Q2) mounted to the metal cage is the usual suspect. Could be CR2 as well. See pages 51-52 in the following Larry Pina book: https://archive.org/details/macclassicse00larr/page/51/mode/1up?view=theater

Manifested worries about the Y2K38 and Y2K40

What’s really interesting about this is that we all could simply change our date to 2040 today and see what happens. Full disclosure, even I haven’t done that yet. 😅

    Color Classic VGA Woes

You might want to check with Luke to see if either his listing or his choice of DF2 diodes is in error because right now it's the same as the stock diode: In other words... Because the stock DF2 diode normally doesn't burn, replacing it with the same exact low-wattage 0.5W part gets you...

    Anyone refurb 400K Floppy drives?

Thomas Andrews owns Amiga of Rochester and is on the East Coast: https://amigaofrochester.com/about-us/ I paid him to fully clean, recap and do trace repairs on a 5126 Backlit Macintosh Portable, and he is well known in the community. He attends VCF shows too. On that form page, choose General...

Error 403 – unable to access Macintosh Garden anymore

Well, darn. I'm not using any VPN and I got the 403 today while doing nothing other than entering PACMAN in the search field and initiating the search. Clicking on the "fix this problem yourself" link yields this error screen... I then switched to Firefox to try it there, but upon trying...

Got My Transparent Inner Bezel From MacEffects Installed

I install them exclusively in my SE and SE/30 machines, so I’m well aware of their low noise benefits. But I’ve never installed four in the same machine, hence my question. Furthermore, except for the noise of the hard drive, those CRT iMacs are pretty silent, and therefore, you would more...

MaciNap: Modern power management for your SE[/30]

So because the motherboard remains powered, any software that can remain running while also keeping the screen 100% black could benefit from this, right? Few will probably use an SE or SE/30 as a server, but I'm just curious if that is one example use case that may see a nice...

MaciNap: Modern power management for your SE[/30]

Fantastic idea! QUESTIONS: 1. If I open Photoshop 1.0, 4.0, etc., create a 100% black screen and display that full screen for more than 3 seconds, does your device kill the Analog Board? 2. How long (approximately) does it take for the sweep circuitry to stabilize? What's the typical "wake...
