ROM SIMM Fun on Vintage Macs & News from VCF Midwest

Everything you wanted to know about custom ROM SIMMs, and so much more! This video took me 7 weeks to make. Much of that time was spent in testing, and in working with Doug Brown and the CayMac team. The end result is amazing. Don't miss the text description on YouTube because I packed it...

    SE/30 RAM Banking QUESTION

Very interesting. I've obviously not tried that app. :-) This raises the importance of have a comprehensive list of vintage software that works fine in 24-bit mode but which crashes in 32-bit. Would be interesting to see how many apps beyond Shufflepuck are affected.

    SE/30 RAM Banking QUESTION

You really only need to run in 24-bit mode when using System 6. But for System 7, I always use 32-bit mode and never have issues. Interesting that the RAM config you mentioned works. I can tell you that putting the reverse in also works (4pcs of 16MB in Bank A, then 4pcs of 1MB or larger in...

    SE/30 RAM Banking QUESTION

I believe you are talking about the solution to bad ROM SIMM connections, not RAM Banking. The RAM Banking problem exists UNLESS you use a non-stock ROM, and then it magically vanishes. Bad ROM SIMM connectivity is caused by most non-stock ROMs being only a nominal 1.20mm thickness, which can...

Logic Board - Macintosh SE Reloaded

Unfortunately, the first time I switched on power after building my board, it worked like a charm. The likelihood of that happening is very low, so I can only say I must’ve been richly blessed. The reason I say it’s unfortunate is because a lot of learning happens whenever there’s a problem...

Logic Board - Macintosh SE Reloaded

@theassailant You did not install C67, correct? Mistakenly installing a capacitor there will cause some pretty crazy issues.

Logic Board - Macintosh SE Reloaded

Hmmm... Seems like you've got both a Sad Mac and garbled video. @Kai Robinson , would this be caused by two separate problems on the motherboard? Also, did you see anything like this when you tested your own SE Reloaded boards?

Love Notes to Newton documentary now on YouTube

I've only watched the first 5 minutes, but it looks like a great film. Thanks for sharing it, Eric. I still have my Newton 2100 (in a Newton 2000 case), which still works. I modded it many years ago so I wouldn't need a dongle to connect things like the keyboard (which I also have). I...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

Colin, I am sorry I do not have a IIci to test, but perhaps this feedback will be semi-helpful... My SE/30 benchmark results in Speedometer 4.01 using the 50MHz socketed Daystar PowerCache (with Power Central v2.2 loaded at startup) tests similarly to what @JeffC reported... I generated...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

I clicked that before I posted, and I even checked the following page, but didn't (and still don't) fully understand... https://github.com/BlueSCSI/BlueSCSI-v2/pull/57 OK. I'm doing a video on ROM SIMMs now, and I wanted to confirm that point. Not related to ROM SIMMs... Got it! Thanks!

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

@eric Please forgive my ignorance, but what is that fix exactly? With a ROM-inator II ROM SIMM, you can press R to boot from a ROM disk or press A to load that ROM disk into RAM and boot from that (which offers edibility). The ROM SIMM from @Zane Kaminski goes further with its own app to...

ROM Clips for securing custom ROM SIMMs in an SE/30

@PotatoFi You just posted some incredibly helpful information! The licensing change especially will help encourage availability of the ROM Clips because Sharealike allows for "commercial use" (with attribution). Thank you very much for providing all those details!

ROM Clips for securing custom ROM SIMMs in an SE/30

Forgive me, Colin, one quick question. You didn't mention "Resin." Would Resin/SLA be just as suitable for these ROM Clips as an FDM like PLA/ABS/ASA? The reason I ask is because JLCPCB's 3D printing service complains the ROM Clips are too small for FDM printing! I am able to choose from...

ROM Clips for securing custom ROM SIMMs in an SE/30

67 views but no replies as of this writing indicates I have asked an especially challenging set of questions. 🤔 Due to the lack of replies, I will now tag a few highly-informed people who might know the answers put forth in my opening post... @alxlab @Androda @Ron's Computer Videos...

    J21 breakout adapters

I don’t have much experience with those power supplies, so I don’t really have a preference. Small yet powerful enough is about all I can say. But if you would be so kind as to put together a second kit for me, I would be more than happy to buy that from you! :-) Buying a complete kit from the...

    J21 breakout adapters

Thank you for the information, Ron! Yes, I would prefer a solution for an SE/30 motherboard that is pretty much the same as the solution for the Mac Plus motherboard shown in Adrian‘s video. Not needing the analog board or stock CRT at all is the real benefit here.

    J21 breakout adapters

@Ron's Computer Videos Adrian's kit for the Mac Plus is shown in his new video at the 12:16 timestamp below... That kit with onboard ATX power supply attaches directly to the main motherboard connector, then he adds a 12V power source to it, and then he attaches an RGB-to-HDMI adapter, which...

    J21 breakout adapters

Thanks, Ron. I look forward to getting my hands on one. I will also need to acquire one of those OSSC/RetroTrink/RGBtoHDMI as I've never used any of those either.
