    1987 Macintosh Plus (Platinum)

I found this one and this one on EBAY. The second one looks too short, but interestingly, it's the only one that cites Apple compatibility. If you were to stick that flyback in another known-working analog board and if the same cap blows on that too, then it's definitely the flyback.

@yock1960 Scroll down to Section 1.1.8 for the answer here: http://macfaq.org/software/macos.shtml Some additional details here too.

    Thought so. Thanks! :-)

There is no Spicy-specific mod required. If you want to remove your stock Color Classic motherboard and put in an LC575 board, AKA Mystic, then you either need a special System Enabler (when running System 7.1) or a System file hack (for Systems higher than 7.1), or the VGA mod.

It's easy to make 7.1 run well because several System Control panels and extensions from 7.5 work in 7.1. So 7.1 is mostly compatible with the major apps you want to use. The speed difference is pretty incredible too. System 7.5.5 is a snail compared to 7.1, and 7.6.1 is a tad slower than...

    1987 Macintosh Plus (Platinum)

Where did you source that flyback? Is it really compatible? Did the Wurth cap at C3 pop when you had the stock flyback installed? I ask because C3 connects between +12V and the T1 flyback as follows... Reasons for C3 to pop would be if polarity was reversed across it, or if the voltage was...

Macintosh SE - Discrete logic GLU replacement

Not sure if you've built and tested it since your post in Feb. this year, but the following blurb from the U3 chip's data sheet indicates that either a 0.1uF or 0.01uF or 0.022uF cap would be a very good idea. If U1 is closest to the Vcc pin, then it won't need another decoupling cap. But U2...

To be honest, as I've mentioned before, I've not had the greatest experience with 7.6 or 8.1 at any temperature. 7.1 is rock solid for some reason. I would recommend trying 7.1 on your machine to see if you have the same kind of stability issues. If not, then it's the OS. If so, then it's a...

What are your vintage grail items?

More than anything else mentioned in this thread, I really REALLY want to see inside one of those backpacks! I'm quite shocked I've never seen a single one sold on EBAY over the years. Maybe some of you have, but I haven't. I mean they must have sold at least a few, so it stands to reason...

What are your vintage grail items?

I assume the software used was something custom written by NASA or one of its contractors? Was it mostly a text based sim or semi-graphical?

Airport card doesn't see any networks (G4 Cube)

Good news and bad news. My co-worker went home and came back with the graphite router! That's the good news. The bad news is he can't find the AC adapter, and even though we have multiple 12V 1A or 2A AC adapters around the office, the pin inside the connector on the router is super thick and...

Airport card doesn't see any networks (G4 Cube)

Airport Card Question. I found a card at work in the original box, in great condition. I've got it installed in my G4 Cube for now so as to test it. Card is recognized. System Profiler shows Firmware 9.52. OS is 10.4.11. PROBLEM: "Wireless network not available." Card is "turned on" as per...

Apple TechStep Replacement ROMs, cartridges, software, and more!

Just to clarify, I am not trying to be critical. In am simply thinking how to hand-hold newbies to get from point A to point B. Newbies may come along and find this thread, then want to know how to easily build a cartridge. So I was thinking of a step-by-step approach to aid them in achieving...

Apple TechStep Replacement ROMs, cartridges, software, and more!

Thank you for the clarifications. Basically, one should not use an Assembly service because in order to use that programmer, you would need to socket the ROM chip, program it, then solder it in. In other words, one should do the soldering assembly themselves. I don't see that as a big issue...

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

If you like, you can do a copy/paste of your excellent table content as an Article (if some folks would find that more helpful), because unlike a certain other forum which shall not be named, you can Edit posts here on TinkerDifferent. 🥳 "Articles" in the "Resources" section are especially made...

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

Going under the assumption that all of Eric Woo's chips really are authentic pulls and not rebadged, I have a couple questions (which we may or may not have discussed privately by email in the past)... 1. Have you tried using thermal tape and a heatsink (applying it and then removing it) to see...

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

That kind of testing is the best you can do to determine if it has the full FPU. The next step is to see how high you can overclock it using the fastest VRAM possible and board recapped with the best capacitors. Then you just need to measure the temperature of the CPU while running an...

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

More specifically, adding the CPU to your computer, then switching on power and launching an app like Norton System Info (or another benchmark utility) which will tell you if the FPU is present or not.
