    yup, the wonders of modern VGA. Modern VGA monitors use an extra pin which powers a ROM on the monitor which communicates its capabilities to the graphics card or system

    hold command, option, p, and r on startup, once you hear the chime the second time, release those buttons, it should reset the resolution

    what you can do is hold down command and v, which will put it in verbose mode, which should tell you what's causing it to hang on shutdown
