    Compact Mac Flyback alternatives?

TechKnight posted about rebuilding flybacks either here or on 68kmla. Apparently, even after you get the coils properly wound, which is a major undertaking by itself, there's some process of dipping teh transformer in a pot of hot something or other, sealant or soemthing like that to drive...

    Quadra/Centris 610/650/800 Ethernet ROM Format

The laptop is running WinXP. Is "restart in MS-DOS mode" available in XP? I'll copy the DOS files to a folder on the HD. There's a bunch of stuff about .ini file configuration that I really hope I don't need to know. I'm not at home at the moment, but I could post the DOS folder here...

    Quadra/Centris 610/650/800 Ethernet ROM Format

According to the Device List I found on line, my Needham EMP-30 supports a Phillips and a Signetics 82S123, if I run the DOS software. I'd straight up offer to program the chips for you when you get to that point, but I've never loaded or run the DOS version of the software -- never needed to...

Interesting solution for LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge

Well, I was assuming that 514256 chip south of the DP83902 was a static RAM, but sure enough, it's a dynamic RAM, so I guess that Asante chip must be at least acting as a memory controller. Except, the large chip on the left is an 80C188 processor, which is a 16 bit processor and I found...

    SCSI Floppy Drives

Back when my job intersected with PaRISC HP machines, I saw that they had an internal SCSI 3.5" floppy drive. Might be interesting if one of those could be found.

    Compact Mac Flyback alternatives?

Wow. Someone must have told Dalbani what they had, or they're more clueful than many other sellers. Not too many years ago they were selling flybacks for less than $10 each. $8 each, IIRC. Checked my records -- that was back in 2013. Longer ago than I thought. Time flies....

Advice for diagnosing scsi failure on Quadra 800?

@lobust I have the chips in hand. Two bricks of 330 parts... I pulled four of them out of one of the bricks. Nice to finally find a use, if only for a few of them. Interestingly, while the chips are marked NCR53C96, the label on the brick has an Apple 337S5396 part number on it...

Interesting solution for LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge

@Kai Robinson I have this one out of the case waiting for me to fix what is probably a voltage regulator issue. Most of the chips look fairly standard and expected -- DP83902, 8530, static RAM, EPROM, and voltage regulator. However, there is an Asante custom chip on there. The full number...

    Printing in Color

Techknight posted a fairly extensive IWII refurbishment thread on 68kmla some time in the last several years. It probably didn't deal with that specific problem, but there was a lot of great information in there. Quite a bit of board level component replacement and part sourcing.

Advice for diagnosing scsi failure on Quadra 800?

It is no nuisance if the box is down stairs. I will try to remember to check this evening, after work.

Flash SIL3112 SATA Controller Card for Mac

My earlier comment is only relevant when using the Sonnet TSATA firmware.

    Brainstorm Clone?

There are a couple of Flash chips (IIRC) on the bottom of the board between the pin header strips.

Advice for diagnosing scsi failure on Quadra 800?

My understanding is that the 53CF96 is not a drop in replacement. Someone posted that the internal registers are fairly different. I haven't dug into the datasheets enough to have first hand knowledge. You are welcome to a few 53C96. I just need to remember to look for them while I'm at...

    ATi FireGL X3 256MB - AGP

If that was teh seller I've been watching for a long while, they wanted 50% more for shipping to the USA than the item cost. 30eu for the cards, but 45eu for shipping and no discount for multiple items bought in one purchase. Still, a great card for conversion to Mac use.

Flash SIL3112 SATA Controller Card for Mac

Your 3112 card must have one of the three supported Flash chips on board. AM29LV040 is one of them. I can't remember the other two. Macronix something or other and can't even remember the third brand. I only remember the AM part number because I have a sleeve of them sitting here from...

What is the best technique to remove SMD ICs ?

Forgot to mention, it is always helpful to apply solder flux to the joints before these operations.

What is the best technique to remove SMD ICs ?

Others will undoubtedly have other, possibly better methods. When I've removed chips from existing SIMMs what I've done is supported the SIMM an inch or so above the surface in an upside down position -- chips hanging from the bottom. (If you have chips on both sides, beats me. Support...

Interesting solution for LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge

Extremely lucky. I've been watching them for the past few years. Several years ago, they were in the find in the ditch next to the road category -- or pay enough to make it worth shipping. Not true any more. The AsanteTalk retailed for $100. For the last couple of years the...
