Day 31 (part 2) It's a Friday night, so I stayed up later than I should... Working on the 190cs battery terminal repair. De-soldered the connector from the motherboard, soaked it in white vinegar for a couple hours with intermittent agitation. Then I bathed it in IPA to cancel the vinegar...

Day 31 I finished installing 7.6 on the PowerBook 190cs. System info: I bought another PowerBook G4 15" 1.5GHz off eBay plus delivery for $20 total. Arrived just today. It was listed as "no post to bios" and "water damage and pressure points on the screen." Screen looks fine except for a...

Day 30 (part 2) Still working on the PowerBook 190cs. I added a CF-to-IDE adapter with a 4GB CF card. Here is a bonus: When you have the 190 motherboard out of the case, the 5300 CD-ROM drive will connect and be useful! I booted off a Mac OS 7 CD. Oops, this model only supports 7.5.2 to...

@Yoda Yes, I would be interested in the 190 badges! I will PM you. Day 30 (so far) I started to try to rebuild the pins on the battery connector. I have a copper shield from a laptop power supply that I cut a thin strip from. Then bent it in roughly a shape I think will work. Angled view...

Day 29 I stopped by the Free Geek Twin Cities (Minneapolis) and found this gem: PowerBook 190cs for US$10 Apparently it belonged to Tristan. Any idea how to remove scratches like these? Otherwise it appears relatively clean. Missing the badges. Measured the screen and the 190 came with...

Drill it out. Turn the laptop so the mobo is vertical, with the drive towards the edge of the table... that way any metal falls down instead of into the motherboard (drill horizontally). Slow speed with a drill bit the size of the screw head, the screws should be soft enough. You just have...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 27 I received some "for parts only" iBook batteries. A couple charged up, but I am sure have no holding power. One actually had screws, so it was easy to disassemble. The others are likely hours of glue busting work. I will have to order about 24 cells and see what happens. Day 28...

Day 26 I found a different power plug for my Apple Pro Speakers mini amp, so I modified my files and started printing 3 more cases in white. And I will likely print the 5th one in Gray. The White PLA seems to be softer than black, and the layers are quite a bit more visible in the white...

Wifi Issues: Just throwing some wild guesses out there. -Did you check the G5 PRAM battery? -Is your time/date set correctly? -Did you create a new account on the G5 or are you using an account from elsewhere that was transferred (maybe permissions or preferences are set incorrectly)...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 24 I went through all the 12" iBook parts again.. I think I can piece together 3 more with some additional parts. Probably won't get those completed for this year's challenge. I had no PPC laptops during last year's challenge, and since then I have purchased about 20 parts machines and I...

Day 22/23 I disassembled the PowerBook G4 15" DLSD and pulled out the LVDS cable. Continuity test showed all pins good end to end. Reinstalled the LVDS cable and wiggled it while powered on... no artifacts. I reached up to tilt the screen and got artifacts... further testing shows the left...

Day 20 Still trying to piece together more iBooks. I pulled a 1.0GHz motherboard from a 14" iBook and solder swapped the battery terminals so it will fit into a 12" iBook frame. Seems to work so far. Just have to finish pulling together the rest of the parts. I stopped by Free Geek Twin...

The external USB case has a converter/controller in it that converts the SATA to USB. Put the SSD back in the USB external and see if its recognized. If it is not recognized, I call bad SSD. If it is recognized, I have no reason to explain why it does not work. The only obscure thing that...

Alright... Can you still boot off the original Hard Drive in either bay (top or bottom) with any of your cables (short black or long red)? Lets just make sure there are not some other system issues other than the SSD drive at this point.

Day 19 The PowerBook G4 is reassembled. There were a few missing screws inside, but luckily I keep a bin of spares. The screen could probably use a new backlight (I have a couple LED strips), but I left it as is. Bottom corners are brighter but you usually only see it on flat full color...

Day 18 All over the place today. Stripped down an iBook 14" 1.0GHz to put inside a 12" 1.2GHz frame. I found a couple things that will require mods, aside from the battery connector. Front side: -Power switch and speaker jacks are wrong pitch, but I think I can salvage some from other boards...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 16/17 I wanted to check the solder job on my 12" iFrankenBook, so I booted it up from a battery. All is well. You can see by the computer name, that I have just been cloning drives instead of clean installs. And the battery charges when plugged in, so all is good. I pulled out the MDD...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 15 part 2 The solder job was a success, it lives!!! 1.42GHz 14" motherboard in a 12" iBook G4. While not fully assembled, I just had to see if I fried anything or not. I did melt the connector a little as I just used a soldering iron and not hot air reflow to remove it from the donor...
