    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 15 Time to Frankenstein with an iBook revisit. Since I received 4x 14" iBook G4 parts machines that I cannot create a complete one from, I will use them just for parts. I am going to transplant a 14" 1.42GHz motherboard into a 12" 1.33GHz frame. Disassembly: Remember where the screws...

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

That Red China Board was documented in our B&W G3 discussion as one of the only reliable ones I found.

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

My 867Mhz MDD was purchased from Free Geek Minneapolis for a few bucks as a project because it did not power on. I tried the PSU cable mod with a standard, and I get power, but nothing more... it was set aside. Today at Free Geek there was a Dual 1.25GHz with 2GB ram for just over a Ben...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

There is no difference in the cables. They have not changed with SATA revisions. Some have a locking clip, most don't. To salvage your 1TB drive, simply find another similar 1TB WD Blue off eBay for parts, and swap the boards on them. I have done that before to recover data from a drive that...

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

Yes, then I am guessing with you that it is software (mostly) and not hardware (unless its the drive issue). Did you try safe mode once installed on your SSD/HD? Are the HDD era equivalent (not too fast/new)? My two PowerBook 3400c's would not work with some other HDDs nor with mSATA to IDE...

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

So, it boots from install media and you are able to install the OS on this machine, or you are doing that elsewhere? If yes, this machine, then I suspect whatever SSD/Adapters you are using may be the issue, kind of like the picky B&W G3. If no, installing elsewhere, have you tried starting...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 14 I finished the new diaphragms on the G4 Cube Pro Speakers and let them dry a couple days. And I fixed the frayed wire on the amp. Final reassembly today. Not perfect, but close enough. And the only real way to test them was to pull out the G4 Cube itself. Power button was sensitive...

Massive (filthy) find in South Carolina

That is definitely a Rat King of mice! Dead SCSI drives. If the same/similar models, have you tried swapping controller cards on the drives? You can also try the Bake or Freeze method to try to get stuck heads loose.

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 13 PowerBook 3400c 200MHz has a 32Mb expansion card. i would get some random memory errors, but after reseating it a couple times and letting it all warm up, they finally went away. Found a working 7.6 cd and was able to get that installed. Didn't try much else in System 7. Went back to...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

I put them on Thingiverse. The mSATA to IDE version and the CF to IDE version. Both side holes and bottom holes should be far enough away from the converters for standard drive screws.

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 12 Spent most of the time working on the 3400c 240MHz. 3D printed a drive tray for the CF to IDE adapters. I used a 16GB CF card partitioned for OS7, OS8, OS9, and shared (osX). os8 and os9 work fine. Still can't find the right os7 distro that works. I even tried recovering off the...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 11 part 2 Got a couple packages in the mail. A lot of 4 iBook 14" for parts and 4 early intel macbooks that are trashed. Got two of the 14" to fire up. A 1.0GHz. thermals And a 1.42GHz model. Not enough parts (top case, palm rest, etc) to make a complete one, so I will experiment with...

Blue and White SCSI 2 Drive Issues

Boot from a CD? Do you have any external firewire devices or other machines? Or try a USB stick.

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 11 So far, finished up my mini amp. Added some colored wires to the amp board and screwed it onto the frame. Then cut the wires to length and soldered to the plugs. Added support straps to the plugs. Like a brother from another mother. And it has a nice little blue LED glowing when...

Blue and White SCSI 2 Drive Issues

Is your SCSI chain properly terminated? Have you booted holding down the option key (should get a blue screen boot picker)? Select the internal SSD, boot up then verify the SCSI drive is good by checking it from the SSD operating system. If you go into startup disk, does the SCSI show as a...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 10 I received some CF-IDE adapters in the mail today, so prepping some CF cards for the two 3400c machines I have. Using an 800MHz G4 iMac. As a continuation of the Apple Pro Speaker cleanup, I had to dissemble my G4 Cube speaker amplifier as the USB power cable was fraying outside the...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Still on Day 9 The Cube speaker pair had disintegrated foam, and one of the speaker cones were actually corroded inside, and did not move. So I will be sacrificing one of the dirtier coned speakers and swap in the new black diaphragms so they look true to original. Removal of the speakers was...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

I was able to just tear off the metal disc on the left. The right side has a metal plate with 6 holes in it to grab hold of the rubber. I cut the front edge off with an Xacto knife. I will be more careful with the next one.

I bought from two different sellers, I was not sure of the exact size as they reference some strange measurements. I landed on the 52mm sizes. Speaker Passive Radiator Diaphragm. They come with a center plate that you can dissolve off with IPA, I think. Speaker Diaphragm 52mm These have the...

    2025 PowerPC Challenge

Day 9 I went through the remaining iBook 12" 1.2 and 1.33 GHz machines again, soldered up the offending chip on the bottom. No luck. I will set them aside for later. Testing some speakers with Ozzy. Bubble Bobble! Looks like a lemmings invasion? I have 9 sets of pro speakers, none...
