PB 1400 with very bad hinges

I'll have a look for that - presumably 3D-printed shims for the hinge screws to fix into? I've seen these things for 165c and 180c models but they are thicker due to the casing accommodating a color screen. I have a BlueSCSI v2 to replace it's hard drive too, but the risk of brittle plastics...

PB 1400 with very bad hinges

It's ironic that my TiBook, which I've had since new, seems to have perfect hinges.... but won't boot. Actually mostly won't power on. Then sometimes it does. Never did like it much though so it's just paying me back for that. Even my PB 170 has creaky hinges these days. Makes me want to stick...

PB 1400 with very bad hinges

That is both comprehensive, and also very helpful. Thanks for the details, and the links too. I hadn't really understood how these hinges were failing, and would probably have taken far more care of this particular 1400 if I'd known. At the very least, it would have helped to secure it with the...

PB 1400 with very bad hinges

Thanks - and very helpful! I didn't even know there had been a solar panel for the 1400 - that's way cool! I've seen a 3D-printable cross member to sit behind the screen and provide new mounts for the hinge screws, and I had thought that might help before I discovered the back had actually...

PB 1400 with very bad hinges

I have a 1400c/166 which has had a very hard life. It actually runs really well, but was badly cracked in the usual places above the hinges on the back panel and I have left it opened on a shelf thinking this would reduce the risk of further damage while I tried to find out how best to repair...

BlueSCSI - Open, Low Cost, DIY SCSI to SD device

In my case, the BlueSCSI boots perfectly and is usable when connected to the internal SCSI cable, as long as the BlueSCSI itself is dangled outside the system. Simply placing it in the HD carrier and buttoning up the casing then results in the system not seeing it. I know it's not the cable...

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

The whole thing about touchscreen interfaces in cars is the epitome of the way technology serves itself/design trends and not the user of it. There can be no valid explanation for creating vehicle control systems where the driver has no option but look away from the road in order to operate the...

BlueSCSI - Open, Low Cost, DIY SCSI to SD device

I have a somewhat similar issue, though not the same. I have a Mac Classic which boots just fine with an 80Mb HD from a Classic II running System 7.0.1, and boots perfectly from a BlueSCSI v1 with 7.1 installed - as long as the BlueSCSI is not actually inside the Classic. When in place in the...

I wish you wouldn't, I was enjoying that!

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

There is no toxicity of any kind. Nor an insult, I'm just not prepared to debate 'capacitor plague' or the relative reliability of generic system designs with you (or anyone in fact) in a thread where the OP has indicated the nature of their question, and that this kind of discussion is hardly...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

This isn't the right thread to debate that. It is also not my experience particularly, what do I know, I only worked in IT since 1985.

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

My experience of reliability of laptops vs desktops over years servicing them is that there wasn't much difference at all between them, and periods where certain makes and models of each were more likely to fail than others. Where desktops tend to fair better, however, is in repairing them...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

An additional thought is that in many areas there are small 'computer repair' type places which can offer help - at a price of course. In my town (pretty small) there are three or four, two of which have been going for years and have good reputations for small repair and system recovery work...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

There is a whole lot to unpick with that, but it wouldn't help the OP in this thread at all, so I'd rather leave it there.

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

I don't necessarily dispute that, though in the context of my thoughts overall, the later-model the system, the potentially greater degree of complexity as a solution to the OP here. It's also worth pointing out that system reliability was largely a factor of the way the market expanded rapidly...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

@Webecedarian it would help to know your actual intended use. By that I mean that in the absence of any internet connection, which would rule out a lot of older systems, what you wish for this computer to be used for, and with what peripherals. The reason this is relevant is that if all you...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

That's fair enough, though if @Webecedarian can tell us what PC it is he wants WordPerfect to be installed on, it may be that someone here can help with a set of install floppy disks. I could probably do 720 or 1.44 3.5-inch, but I don't have the means to do 5.25-inch.

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

As @YMK says, you can get it for free. That page has a number of different download options for the same (WordPerfect 5.1) software. Mostly English versions, but a few other languages too, and some from 5.25-inch others for 3.5-inch floppy images. Just pick the version best suited to your needs...

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

I feel much the same. The business isn't driven by what we (users) need or want any more, but by factors which are often exactly NOT what users need or want. In practical terms for what I need, for example, the performance of a 30 year old PowerBook running age-appropriate software is not that...
