Interview with Bob "Dr. Macintosh" LeVitus

Exactly. And that’s why I always envisioned Sluggo to be punching Windoze (proper spelling) in the face back then. And what Power Computing was doing back in those days was no joke. They were besting Apple on the performance front and showcasing how great the Mac could be.

Interview with Bob "Dr. Macintosh" LeVitus

Wow! Love it. Where do I begin? In the first part of the video, LeVitus said he was "hot for Mac clones." Indeed, a lot of us were back in the day, even though I think most of us knew in our gut it wasn't going to work out so well for Apple. We users back then could see the negative impact...

PowerFox - new web browser for Leopard on PowerPC!

The G4 Cube I am testing on has the stock ATI Radeon Rage 128 Pro installed. So I guess 16MB of VRAM? The machine is at the office and I’m home for the weekend so I can’t check right now.

PowerFox - new web browser for Leopard on PowerPC!

I just downloaded the new v3.1 under OS 10.4.11 on my G4 Cube (with 1.7GHz Sonnet CPU). Disk image mounted fine. But the MacFox v3.1 app launched and crashed right away... Again, I don't know how to convey this info to the developer, but if anyone here does, please pass the word along. Thanks.

PowerFox - new web browser for Leopard on PowerPC!

Alas, it's not yet ready for Tiger. On a G4 Cube running a fresh install of 10.4 Tiger, the disk image won't even mount... When I update to 10.4.11, the disk image mounts and I can copy the app to my HDD, but when I launch it, it crashes. Reporting it here on TD because I don't know how to...

Testing Needed: Apple CD/DVD Driver 1.4.8 Universal For 7.1 - 9.2.2 (SCSI Drives)

I actually found this thread looking for the UNMODIFIED "Apple CD/DVD Driver" Extension that appears in a clean install of OS 9.2.2, but ultimately I found it. Attached is a ZIP archive of it for those who need it.

Recapped SE/30 - Occasional Horizontal Screen Shake

I have a flyback from an SE/30 with exactly such a broken bar. I replaced that flyback from a NOS flyback I purchased way back around 2006. Sadly, nobody makes these anymore, and it's really sad because the flyback is the SINGLE MOST NEEDED COMPONENT of any on the SE and SE/30 Analog boards...

Recapped SE/30 - Occasional Horizontal Screen Shake

Your Analog board was professionally recapped at the start of this thread. After some discussion, you decided to change the transistor, BU406, and you said that made a meaningful difference at the time. But today, problems seem to remain, and the consistent thing on your analog board is the...

PowerFox - new web browser for Leopard on PowerPC!

Please let me know when the Tiger (10.4.11) version is out. My 1.3GHz 7455 G4 Cube would love to use it!

    New Defrag Utility in 2026

This is absolutely outstanding. You see, every single time I use my M1 Max 16" MBP to add a new disk image to the SD card of my FloppyEMU, the card gets fragmented. I've spent hours and hours trying nearly everything to prevent the fragmentation, but nothing worked. I don't have this problem...

PowerBook 180c TRACKBALL Repair Help Needed

I don’t disagree with that, but the rollers behaved 100% the same before and after my IPA cleaning. Meaning, when using my finger on either roller, the arrow pointer moved just fine on screen; but when I put the ball in, the behavior was bad, as shown in the recent video I posted in this thread.

PowerBook 180c TRACKBALL Repair Help Needed

I’ve seen the removal of the trackball assembly from the case and therefore understand how to do that, but I’ve yet to find a single photo on the tear down of that trackball assembly, which is rather interesting. Have you ever disassembled the trackball assembly? Yes, and I mentioned my having...

PowerBook 180c TRACKBALL Repair Help Needed

@Kai Robinson Before I embark upon disassembling the Trackball Assembly (a more complex job than on a Mac Portable and the reason I started this thread), is because I have no experience doing this, and I have read extensively about broken standoffs caused by merely opening the machine in the...

PowerBook 180c TRACKBALL Repair Help Needed

I checked the ball with my precision Mitsutoyo calipers just now, Kai, and it's 30.03mm in diameter nominal, deviating only by +/-0.01mm as I rolled it around and around in the calipers. Roundness is excellent. Surface is extremely smooth, with no pitting or flaws that I can detect.

PowerBook 180c TRACKBALL Repair Help Needed

I recently acquired a PowerBook 180c and found it's trackball didn't produce any vertical arrow pointer movement, so I cleaned the ball, rollers, and the red-eye gizmos, but that didn't do any good. When I use my finger on each roller, the arrow pointer moves just fine horizontally and...

    LC575 computer killed LC520 motherboard! 😭

@David Cook To bring this thread to a final conclusion, I just wish to say that after removing the 3 resistors again in order to overclock back to 33MHz, and with my VRAM and 32MB RAM SIMMs installed, the motherboard booted up right away inside my Color Classic, and its currently running Norton...

    LC575 computer killed LC520 motherboard! 😭

With the 3 resistors still soldered to the board, I wanted to re-run TechStep again. All tests passed this time, including SCSI. When I pressed zero (0), it told me my spinner drive's make and model number. So all good on that front. Later testing will be done with the 3 resistors removed...

    LC575 computer killed LC520 motherboard! 😭

Oh no doubt some of those 575 body pins may have turned green. I pulled one of our office G4 Cubes from storage a week ago, and when I pushed in the handle and pulled out the core, I noticed that the soft metal mesh that goes around the top edge of the core and makes contact with the inner...

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

Funny, I never paid much attention to how people here in Japan referred to that particular iMac through the years. But I guess the reason I've never heard the Daifuku comparison is because there are just so many darned Windows users here! :-) That coupled with the fact I read English language...

    LC575 computer killed LC520 motherboard! 😭

@David Cook , you're a miracle worker. At least, I think you are. Last night, I cleaned the gold fingers with 100% IPA. Against the advice of my wife, I decided to go to work today, in part because I hate being absent, but also because my soldering equipment is at the office, and well...
