That's interesting, I had the exact same problem with my Power Mac 6500/300! Freezing within minutes of play of basically all hardware accelerated games, regardless of it was RAVE or OpenGL.

The test is try Quake RAVE or GLQuake for longer than 2 minutes. I expect the 275 to succeed with an ATI card, the TAM will freeze within 2 minutes.

Yes, and probably the TAM but I don’t have one to test on.

Thank you for testing @joevt. I have heard reports that the game is playable in 8.6 if you supply the DrawSprocket and RAVE extensions from OS 9.0, but I have not tried it myself.

I was recently gifted a 2003 Acer TravelMate 290 to use for windows 98 game development, but sadly it does not support D3D hardware acceleration under Windows 98 with the only available drivers for the integrated GPU, Intel's own drivers. It has an 855GM chipset. Acer's official drivers do work...

My problem was not on the CPU, I don't know the name of the component. It had a big grey aluminum heatsink, in the center of the logic board. The CPU is to the left of that component, and mounted on the bottom side.

You could have the same problem as I did then, busted BGAs.
