    Mac IIsi Repairathon

I've worked with ex-military guys over the years, and while it seems a bit gimmicky at first, it really does clarify and simplify things. Sort of like using a 24 hour clock instead of AM/PM.

    Macintosh II SI capacitor question

I've seen it eat one of those resistors, but it's impressive to see all three obliterated. 😬

    Macintosh II SI capacitor question

What a mess. 😩 I’d be interested in a poll of what Mac or Mac peripheral has the worst corrosion or leakage problems. I’d have to think the IIsi PSU would be among the top contenders.

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Hard Drive Archeology Tonight, I plugged in seven hard drives from the Mac IIsi to see if anything was salvageable. There were three Quantum LPS drives (two of which were 80MB and one was 230MB), a Quantum ELS of unknown size, a 40MB Conner drive, a 120MB Maxtor, and finally a 200MB Maxtor...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Tonight was floppy night I worked on all seven floppy drives, following @Branchus excellent restoration tutorial. It was like spending an evening with the Bob Ross of vintage Mac repairs. 🙂 I nearly stumbled on the eject gears. While disassembling the eject mechanisms, I noticed that two...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Logic Board Summary: I started with one working IIsi, and I now have five functional IIsi logic boards! Here is a run down: Alpha - Recapped and working in 2021, now has an audio issue * Bravo - Recapped and failed repair in 2021, now working except for an audio issue Charlie - Recapped and...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Echo: This IIsi was sending me mixed messages. It was the dirtiest of the non-battery bombed systems, so I tackled it last, assuming it would likely have issues. However, when I started recapping, the old caps came off pretty easily, and even more surprising, I was able to get the pads to take...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Delta: Another straightforward recap and clean for this one. I will say I make less dumb mistakes as I go when I recap several machines in a row. This logic board is working well. Delta had corrosion from leakage, but it was not terrible. No traces were eaten away and the IC pins were okay...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Yes, I did clean them, and even added fresh solder to see of thickening them up a bit would help. Unfortunately, something more troublesome is going on. Also, unfortunately, I damaged the speaker amplification circuit on my working Alpha unit while trying to diagnose what was going on with...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Charlie: The Charlie system needed a recap, a good clean, and it worked perfectly. It's nice to have one easy one! Though, some of my problems with Alpha and Bravo were due by my poor recapping skills when I tackled them in 2021. Now, I'll sometimes use the snip and remove the legs method...

    Macintosh II SI capacitor question

With my Mac2VGA, connected to a IIsi, I have pin 1,4, and 5 on and the rest off. This works with my VGA displays. This corresponds with 640x480 at 66Hz. I’ve attached the cheat sheet for my adapter. It seems doubtful the BMOW ROM gives the IIsi more video output options, but it’s worth...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Well, they sort of grew over time. I got my first from a retired couple who sold me all their old Macs when they downsized. Unfortunately, this is one of the battery bombed units. I then went on the hunt for a replacement, and I ended up getting two because the seller was slow to ship the one I...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

Beginning with Bravo: This is the sister to Alpha, which was successfully restored in early 2021. I acquired both from a Texas seller who said he picked them up at Computer Reset. I started off repairing both, but when this unit didn't work after the cap replacement, I set it aside. It seems...

    Mac IIsi Repairathon

An embarrassing long time ago, I set off on an effort to restore a collection of Mac IIci. I had much to learn. I knew enough to replace capacitors and clear corroded traces, but I lacked the knowledge to tackle serious problems. I may still lack that knowledge, but I'm going to try again...

Macintosh IIsi, Recapped, quite chime, no display.

I’ve seen some terrible cap leakage from those SMD caps on the daughter card, likely because of the heat from the PSU. My memory is hazy, but they may be involved in the soft start function from the keyboard power button. If that’s working, they may be okay for now.

Macintosh IIsi, Recapped, quite chime, no display.

FYI: The IIsi power supply is notorious for leaking caps. Both a couple of through holes on the end opposite the mains connection and the SMD caps on a daughter card. If they aren’t problem yet, they will be. Good luck!

Recreating the Mac's CUDA / EGRET microcontroller chips - can it be done?

He shared that he was using a 68hc705e1– an EPROM variant of the original IC. This link may be helpful: https://github.com/DosFox1/Raven-Programmer I believe he was working with @max1zzz to test the results. I pointed him toward this thread. Perhaps he will jump into the discussion.

343S0120 (0120) voltage monitor IC (LC, Color Classic, Classic II) replacement

Sure, selling them is great. As long as cool solutions get out there. :)

343S0120 (0120) voltage monitor IC (LC, Color Classic, Classic II) replacement

Impressive work finding a suitable solution! I appreciate those that can take on this level of research and add creativity. Are you planning on posting the details on how to obtain the IC and PCB?

Poll - Extending the term length of the board

Staggered terms are critical if the board moves beyond one year (which I support). Perhaps there is a randomized way to assign staggered terms (i.e. drawing names out of a hat), to establish a sensible rotation. Relatedly, it’s quite common for officers to rotate in position up to the chair.
