Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Thanks, @0dan0! I confirmed that the button address is correct at 0xA0E8b7d0 by seeing 01 for up arrow and 02 for down arrow. The ISO address doesn't seem to be correct, but I'll keep looking around that range. I haven't been able to successfully tie into an auto exposure hook yet---I found...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

@0dan0 , were you able to see the reelType value in the D.BIN dump I provided? I've finally got a hook calling into your hist.c code, but I'm getting a crash in the unit. I probably don't have the frame number pointer correct, or it's not finding reelType where it thinks it should be.

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Thanks for your patience with me, @0dan0 ! I've attached the compressed D.BIN file that I grabbed from my D unit. I used your "freed up space" version of the D RBN (shows "Type D - WIP" on boot screen). As far as I can tell, the LCD address is still the same. When I ran the mem commands you...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I've ported (what I believe are) the core improvements from 0dan0's Type C firmware to Type D hardware. The device now runs 1600x1200 @ 18fps with improved auto exposure, stable with no motor issues. The following summary was created by Claude.ai with some notes of my own. What's Working ✅...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Device: Kodak Reels Type D (H-series, Serial: H2825148BK...) Achievement: 1600x1200 output resolution working on D variant hardware! Background The Type D variant has been unsupported by existing firmware mods due to significant differences from A/B/C variants. After extensive reverse...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

@0dan0 - Perfect timing! I've been working on D variant analysis. What I have: Stock D firmware (H2825... serial) NVM base address: 0x80E0D600 (found via Ghidra analysis) Device type should be 4 (as you predicted) Successfully injected manual WB code already (device boots and captures, and...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Thank you, @0dan0 ! I put your resized version of the firmware on the SD card, and booted it. I saw the text "Type D - WIP" appear on the screen before it went into the main menu. Everything appears to be working with the regular stock operations. Let me know what I can do next! I was using...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I'd like to start testing any D mods if possible. I created that man_wb mod but I don't know what to do next. Claude.ai has helped me some, but any pointers on build creation and testing would be fantastic. Thank you!

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Thanks @0dan0 . After unpacking the BIN to a RBN file using ntktool and then comparing with "fc /b FWDV280-D.rbn [email protected] > differences.txt" on Windows, the comparison reads no differences encountered. Good to know! UPDATE: I compared the two files in WinMerge and no differences...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

With the help of a relative (who's much better and more experienced at soldering than I am!), I was able to get the UART USB board to connect and grab the stock firmware from my unit. On cursory glance, the firmware for my H2825 unit may be different than the D version I was looking at before...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Thanks @0dan0 ! How have you handled the adapter board in so far as mounting on the outside or inside the unit? I don't want to have a bare board outside of the main case, and I'm curious to know what folks have done. The tutorial didn't say much other than to thread the wires though the vents...

@0dan0 , do you have any pictures of where you soldered wire to on the UART board?

Wow, excellent write up, @Deano ! (Your icon connotes that you're in the Seattle area? I used to live on Bainbridge Island. :) ) This should be on a dedicated page on the site here. Would you mind sharing your 3D files? There's so much information from @0dan0 and others spread through lots of...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

@0dan0, which gauge wire did you use for your UART connector to the Reelz board? The tutorial mentions 34 AWG. Is 22 AWG too thick for the soldering points?

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

As much as I do not want to add a serial port to the device, it seems prudent of course! @0dan0 , can you recommend the UART USB serial board to use? This might seem like a silly question, but what does the existing micro USB port on the back of the Kodak Reels do? I didn't see it mentioned in...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

@0dan0 , hmm.... I have the H2825 unit, not the D2825. Should I still try the Type B firmware on this unit, or is that already known to not work with the H2825 serial numbers? I didn't attempt to get the firmware directly from my unit---all of my code comparisons with the Type D came from the...

@0dan0 , I did some Ghidra work over the weekend. I created this issue in your Github repo: https://github.com/0dan0/4reels/issues/1 I'm not sure if this is helpful at all. Here's a copy of what I posted: I've analyzed the D variant firmware and calculated memory address offsets: - frameno...

@0dan0 , thank you for the pointer to the 3D fabrication service! I haven't done any 3D printing yet---can you tell me which options I should choose on this service? * FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) or SLA (Stereolithography) * Infill (Should this be 100% "Solid Object"?) * Layer thickness...

Thanks again, @0dan0 , for posting details. I think I might try my Dremel with a 426 wheel to make the cuts--very carefully! I've used this before. I'd like to see if a better plastic cover could be made to accommodate this new height so that the parts aren't left exposed so easily.
