The IPA probably dried out the blue rubber, possibly causing it to also shrink a bit. As others have said, I too would guess that they’re not “sticking” to the ball as well anymore :)

Have you ever used alltransistors.com? You may be able to find alternatives which are either still made (unlikely) or has NOS. Perhaps a modern transistor could be used with an adapter board.

The curvature conforms, whether there's a thin sheet of acrylic or not :) I've placed a 0.75mm sheet in mine and it will hold the curvature because it's so thin and flexible — albeit, not entirely convincing due to the refraction index of the acrylic.
