    Tunnel vision on PB170

Backlit or non-backlit, or are they the same, just one having a tube?

    Tunnel vision on PB170

techknight on the 68k forums probably knows, he's a total expert on the Portable. I'll go ahead and post an update on the 68k crosspost thread.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

I've seen that list, and you can see that the 170 and 180 both use Hosiden panels. It would be interesting to see the manufacturer of the Duo 280 and 540 displays, but both of those systems (especially the grayscale 540) are pretty rare. Same with PC laptops that have the problem. Is it mainly a...

    Tunnel vision on PB170

I Wonder what the manufacturer on the Duo 280 and PB 540 is.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

On a slight tangent here, I was wondering about something like this for Maxell batteries. Apple used around 5 different battery brands, and while they can all leak, the Maxells are so much worse. If we know for example (this is completely made up), that a Macintosh IIci assembled at the US...

    Tunnel vision on PB170

I would imagine that if one model was not affected we would know by now. It's all of the monochrome and grayscale active matrix displays, including those found in PC laptops.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

Good points, I’d be glad to check my manufacture date/region if you do find that it is labeled. My backlight is super white, much more so than other 170s appear in photos. CCFL backlights usually turn yellow with use though, not over time. Mine is probably just a low hour system.

How were the PowerBook 1xx bags?

My PowerBook 170 came with a pretty fitting bag. It has absolutely zero branding whatsoever on it, but it's well built and has space for accessories. I can also take some pictures later.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

If the problem is due to adhesive failure, why would some displays not be affected? If we look at other functions on these computers that degrade, such as rubber parts that go all melted and sticky, it happens to just about all of them. While most 170s and 180s have the problem, many (including...

    PowerBook 3400c!

Varta doesn’t make them anymore, but you can get aftermarket packs on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Synergy-Digital-Battery-Compatible-02664E/dp/B094NTM26 It‘s not quite the same form factor, but you could squeeze it in somewhere I’m sure. It’s also 40 mAh instead of 50, not sure if that would...

    Tunnel vision on PB170

Interesting results. My crosspost on 68kmla got some interesting input from the very skilled techknight. Here's the link: https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/new-theory-on-the-cause-of-the-infamous-tunnel-vision-problem-testers-needed.41265/

    PowerBook 3400c!

After months of waiting, a PowerBook 3400c popped up on eBay for a price that I was actually willing to pay. All I knew going into it was that it turned on, was a 200MHz model with 48MB of RAM and a 2GB HDD, and that it came with the charger and FOUR batteries. The seller didn't give details on...

LCD Screen replacement for Powerbook 100

Is there any proof of the whole contagious thing? Seems really strange if true.

LCD Screen replacement for Powerbook 100

That display should be fixable as well. It’s got vinegar syndrome, which is an issue with the display polarizer adhesive going bad. If you replace the polarizing film the display should work again. The PowerBook‘s logic board and the display will also need to be recapped as well if you haven’t...

    Tunnel vision on PB170

The image you showed was vinegar syndrome - when the display polarizer adhesive fails. You can replace the polarizer to fix that issue, but it's tricky.

Massive Vintage Apple Haul in Idaho

Besides the complete madness that is this haul (how, seriously...), you got a PowerBook 540??!? The regular non-c 540 was only sold for a few months and seems to be one of Apple's rarest laptops, and yet you've gone and found one! You've got the haul of the century there.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

You could really be onto something here... My 170 doesn't have any tunnel vision currently, so I can't help test, but we gotta have more people this out! I've read through the entire long 68kMLA thread on the issue started back in 2014 or so multiple times and I don't recall anyone specifically...

    My PB170

Good work restoring this awesome old Mac! The 170 is a great machine, besides the dreaded tunnel vision that my panel somehow doesn't have. Keep it up!

    Toshiba T4600C - capacitor identification

I would assume so, usually in my experience small caps can just put the values and not the units, going uf then volts under that. Could be wrong but around 80% sure.
