Mac Portable Screen Visibility without Backlight: 5126 vs. 5120

I would appreciate feedback from 5120 Mac Portable owners who have a machine that works and who have experiencing adjusting the contrast of their LCD. I have a 5126 Backlit Portable, but when I turn off the Backlight, the LCD is really hard to see even under good lighting conditions, as shown...

    NiMH PRAM battery conversion

Wow! Fantastic! Tiny but so useful. This is great. I should mention one usage caveat that will affect some SE/30 motherboard owners out there. Phil Greenland created an RTC replacement with memory that stores PRAM and basically everything but the Date and Time when the machine is power off...

sit - Create StuffIt archives on Unix systems

Giving people power and options is always nice, but after reading your recent replies, would that “encoding” feature only confuse users into thinking they somehow need that encoding? Because you made it pretty clear that no encoding is necessary for SIT files.

Backlit Portable 5126 — Is your backlight this dim?

Hi, folks. I know the Portable's backlight is rated at a meager 53 nits, but if any of you own a 5126 Backlit Portable, could you please tell me if your backlight is as dim as mine? I filmed the short video below under standard room lighting with a rather strong LED room light, and then an...

sit - Create StuffIt archives on Unix systems

There was some debate here about the need to encode Stuffit 1.5.1 *.sit files (for uploading to Macintosh Garden, etc.) using BinHex or MacBinary. The thinking was initially that the older v1.5.1 lacked Resource Forks, but then the dialog got kind of convoluted and nothing specific was...

SE/30 noise in video - where do I look next?

For a single project one-off, Console5 is cheap. It's hard to beat it. But yes, buying several recap jobs' worth of parts at once from Mouser or DigiKey to get free shipping can work and get you low prices too. You just need to watch out when using SMD types like Polymer Tantalum because they...

SE/30 noise in video - where do I look next?

In regards to good quality LCR meters, unless you're going to pay more than $1,000 for a benchtop meter, the absolute cream of the crop for hand-held in a reasonable price range is the DE-5000, which I personally use all the time...

SE/30 noise in video - where do I look next?

I have nothing against Console5. Nothing. I respect the seller for the service he provides to so many. But I'm one of those really finicky EE's who really wants to know ALL THE SPECS of the caps before ordering, and Console5 doesn't provide that level of detail. Again, not biggy for most...

SE/30 noise in video - where do I look next?

Well, @basslinemz has only posted twice in this thread so far, so he does need to chime in with answers to your questions. But his opening post says he used Console5, which isn't a vendor I've personally used in the past, but the fellow does make his living selling cap kits, and I've never...

    Cracked Hinge on Mac Portable

What I’m trying to do is avoid a situation that leads to a permanent gluing (via 2-part epoxy like JB Weld 24-hour cure) of the right side cylindrical hinge into its hinge holder. And it is the hinge holder that cracks, not the cylindrical hinge. TechKnight shows here that he used some kind of...

    Cracked Hinge on Mac Portable

One other person in this thread has the same exact problem. And @techknight has a recent video (mentioned earlier in this thread) showing a Portable with the same cracked hinge holder too. That means there are likely others out there. Sadly, many Portable owners seem to be hibernating...

    Modern power supply for se/se30?

Leaked capacitor fluid slowly eats through tiny PCB traces over time. If you power the machine repeatedly with fluid all over the board, it could cause issues because it is electrically conductive. Not as bad as spilling water on a power board, but still rather bad.

    Modern power supply for se/se30?

But the facts remain facts, regardless of the job difficulty. So in the event of a job where you have 400 capacitors, you would need to decide if its worth it. If it were me, I wouldn't recap it at all and probably even try to get rid of it. A partial recap wouldn't have much meaning, even if...

    Modern power supply for se/se30?

There is no fluid-filled electrolytic capacitor that has eternal life. This isn’t a guess on my part. It’s absolute fact. If you consult datasheets and white papers, you’re not going to find capacitor manufacturers that guarantee an Hour rating beyond 20 or 25 years, no matter what it...

    Cracked Hinge on Mac Portable

Okay, friends. I have test results for you. Here is a closeup of the bubbles again, this time shot from the bottom of the polycarbonate board... Here's a video I made of the testing, showing you what it took to break the bond... Here are photos take after the break... Would love to...

SE/30 noise in video - where do I look next?

I don't concern myself with the failure mode of SOLID tantalum capacitors because I understand that most every manufacturer of those has datasheets and whitepapers that explain you need to rate them at TWICE your maximum working voltage. That is an absolute must, but many in our hobby don't...

SE/30 noise in video - where do I look next?

As mentioned in my earlier post, the opening post said he recapped everything, which I assumed meant literally that. So when I saw his Motherboard photo, I assumed those CAN style caps to be modern polymer replacements. And I know, because I like to use OS CONs on my SE/30 boards rather than...

    SPIISD V2 has been released

I wish I was knowledgeable to be helpful in this thread, but I'm unfortunately not, Colin. By the way, I wish to humbly and formally offer you the warmest of welcomes to TinkerDifferent. Folks, Colin, is quite brilliant when it comes to the Apple II platform, as evidenced by his incredible...
