Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

@0dan0, thanks for the v7.7 update. It seems to be working well on my Type C scanner. I like having the stats/settings over on the right side, to not obscure the scan preview - well done! ISO Max setting works well. As you you had mentioned previously, the ISO does not exceed 400 during...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

This is most likely due to the encoder freezing up and can be mitigated in various ways. See the “Known Issues” section of the User Guide (link in my signature). Also, it could be the file size limit being reached.

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

The Qp (Quantization Parameter) level that you set (15) and see being achieved (16) is quite good (essentially the highest quality compression you can achieve on this hardware with this current custom firmware, and WAY better than what you could achieve with the stock firmware). Qp can be...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Thanks @0dan0, I can confirm that at on my Type C scanner, the ISO value does 400 ISO during film scanning and also reported up to 800 ISO when I put my finger between the light and the lens (blacking out the sensor). Also, the encoder is showing as running at Qp 16 (when set to 15). Thanks for...

I see that the Qp level now ranges from 15 to 29 (instead of 39) and it no longer loops back to 20 when exceeding that range) = Good!

Does this WB settings table take into affect the Red "Trim" you had where 496,256,256 was "default/white."

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

@0dan0 small bit of feedback on 7.4 (C). I'm not sure you designed it this way or not, but during capture, while adjusting the Qp, if I am currently at minimum Qp of 15 and continue to press the - button to lower the Qp further, instead of remaining at 15, it jumps back to Qp min of 20...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

This sounds wonderful. Do the previous methods of adjusting those settings (White Balance, Tint, Saturation, Frame Rate) still work?

I messaged you a link to a recent capture file that potentially demonstrates this. (7.1.1, model C, Super8, lens mod)

I suspect that newer units are more likely compatible with the C firmware (the unit lookup tool doesn't accurately report on newer units). Give this one a try: FWDV280-TypeC-V7.1.1-0dan0

I can also report that several instances of my scans on a type C with 7.1.1 have frame jitter (frankly it happens more often than it doesn’t happen. Sometimes it’s significant, but sometimes very subtle and I have to look closely for it or compare to older scans of the same footage. Would...

Check that you have the film fed under the 4 black tabs in the scan path. Depending on how/where the film is coming out, you may need to adjust the tension on the metal press plates by slightly screwing or unscrewing them (the plates are spring loaded). You may also consider not using the...

I've taken the opportunity to revise the User Guide to 0Dan0's Custom Firmware to include some Known Issues. Will try to keep these updated as progress is made. I've also revised the Version Release notes section. Also, @eyeidea, while I think it would be great for someone to put together a...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

With a Model C on v7.1.1, I started scanning a 7" reel of Super8 film yesterday. Started off going well for about 7 minutes of resulting footage (with no issues on the resulting file). And then I had to stop the capture to re-frame the image. I restarted the capture and it automatically ended...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I found success with using Pec Pads and Film Guard solution to gently clean dust/dirt from the film before scanning, while also lubricating it. Some film didn’t need it as much as others (those that had been screened more often). I did use Pec 12, but for cleaning the film path on the scanner...
