2026 PowerPC Challenge: the user's Unofficial thread

Sony Mavica was my first real digital camera that was not a webcam. I had Canon film DSLRs and lots of lenses so when I migrated to digital, I kept with Canon because of the lenses. I collected quite a few before 2017 when I started chasing some Solar Eclipses (always went near the center in...

2026 PowerPC Challenge: the user's Unofficial thread

Day 7: Thanks for the memories! I stopped at Free Geek Minneapolis to have a gander. I picked up 4x1G PC3200U for my G5 units A & C, bringing them up to 4GB and 7GB. I also grabbed 4x2GB PC2-6400 for my G5 Quad, bringing that up to 11GB. I saw a $5 Sony Mavica CD1000 camera, one I have been...

2026 PowerPC Challenge: the user's Unofficial thread

Day 6: (we've only just begun) I ran the Thermal Calibration on the dual 1.8 Unit A last night and it failed. Swapped out a processor from the "flaky" B unit and ran the tcal again this morning with success! Also installed Panther 10.3 Both CPUs are recognized. Benchmarked with GB 2.20...

    Powermac G3 plastic part collection

Yes, I experimented with that with my Mini eMac and I will incorporate that to the files soon...

Day 5: More G5 stuff. I decided to pull both CPUs from the B unit "flaky" and put them into the A unit. Booted and recognized dual processors! But... the exit fan was missing a blade and after a CPU swap it was in turbo fan mode. Luckily I have a couple spares I ordered since last year (see...

2026 PowerPC Challenge: the user's Unofficial thread

Day 4: Spent some time on the lot of G5s. The new-to-me dual 1.8 (lets label them alphabetically from the top down, A through E) seems to have been stripped for parts. Since B was listed from last year as "flaky", I pulled parts to complete A, and was able to install MacOS 10.4 and 10.5. I...

2026 PowerPC Challenge: the user's Unofficial thread

Day3: I confirmed that I have FIVE PowerMac G5s of various configs. The three from 2025 were converted to air cooled. The Quad machine has no processors in it. The top two have no video card. One is missing the clear panel inside. The top new one has two processors that are air cooled...

2026 PowerPC Challenge: the user's Unofficial thread

Day 1: I was working on my iPad panel for an Apple //c. Day 2: I have collected 5x G5 towers in different configs (3 from previous year's Challenge and 2 for this year). Hopefully this weekend I can sort out at least 2 or 3 good working ones.

Custom 9.7" Display (iPad 1,2,3) for Apple //c with STL files and build guide [Draft: work in progress]

This is primarily based on the design by @ArjenCNX in this thread. I have made some modifications to the files to support any iPad 1, 2, or 3: 9.7" panel that you can rescue from a non-functional iPad. There are enough changes to warrant this as a separate thread, so I don't flood the thread and...

    4,1 MacPro upgrade

Upgrading to 5,1 increases the CPU and RAM capacities (or speed). Check out House of Moth. Your iMac can be restored to working order with a graphics card replacement, not a simple task, but doable. Or you can turn the iMac into an external display.

    A Tale of Two Classics

I removed the R88-R90 and saw the VIAs were completely gone. I did not have any donor boards that had the correct size SMDs, so I used conventional through hole. Using the other leg on the top to join into existing traces. Same with some bodge wires from bottom to top. Lots of the VIAs had...

    A Tale of Two Classics

I pulled the CNY17G from this board 630-0395 (left) and the one from the damaged 630-0525 board (right). They are different versions. Installed the CNY75GB into the 0395 board, and now I get a solid image. Now I have to concentrate on the battery bombed motherboard. After using the dental...
